Job Description

We are currently seeking highly qualified, self-motivated interns to accelerate research towards new applications, core methodologies, and technologies in Artificial Intelligence at Hewlett Packard Labs.

Hewlett Packard Labs is an international research organization with its headquarters and largest facility located in Milpitas, California. As the central research organization for Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), Hewlett Packard Labs' purpose is to deliver breakthrough technologies and technology advancements that provide a competitive advantage for the company, by investing in fundamental science and technology in areas of interest to HPE and getting the resulting technologies ready for adoption into new and existing markets.

The Artificial Intelligence Research Lab within Hewlett Packard Labs focuses on researching and developing technologies, architectures, hardware, and software to create cutting edge solutions in key areas of Deep Learning and Machine Learning. This is a unique opportunity to work at a start-up pace within a big company. We are looking for an entrepreneurial mind-set, and a deep passion to take a ML problem and conduct research and come up with a solution with a fast turnaround time. You will have an opportunity to work with Machine Learning experts who have made multiple successful products and will get guidance and coaching in different areas including software engineering, hardware optimizations, data pipelining, and innovations from latest AI research to bring hardened Deep Learning solutions to the real world.

The Emerging Accelerators Team in the Artificial Intelligence Research Lab has openings for Research Associate interns who are pursuing a PhD degree with a background in electrical engineering, computer engineering, physics, or related fields. The researcher will investigate high-performance accelerators which combine CMOS and emerging ReRAM device technologies (or memristors) for computing applications including network security, machine learning, neuromorphic computing, finite automata, and other novel computational models. The work can span a range of activities including the design of prototype systems and/or integrated circuits; invention of new architectures, circuits, and/or devices to take advantage of physical hardware systems for acceleration of target computations; the operation of existing hardware platforms; and performance evaluations with competing systems.

We expect all our researchers (including interns) to provide thought leadership and technical influence both internally and externally to HPE, as well as take innovative ideas and make them real – contributing along the full range from initial novel ideas to design, development, implementation, evaluation, and technology transfer. The ideal candidate can thrive in an applied research environment, balancing significant technical and scientific contributions with the ability to bring such contributions to practice through innovative solutions that address the needs of our customers and partners. We expect the successful candidate to collaborate with Hewlett Packard Labs research teams as well as with external partners, and to work in alignment with HPE's broader innovation community.

Education and Experience

  • Pursuing a PhD degree (or other degree with significant research and innovation experience) in a relevant discipline (e.g. electrical engineering, computer science, machine learning, math, statistics, etc.).
  • Track record of world-class innovative contributions and ideas in AI/ML and/or related areas.
  • Experience with innovative solution development, such as developing proofs-of-concept, first-of-a-kind solutions, and/or technology transfer.

Relevant Technical Skills:

  • Experience with in-memory computing accelerators.
  • Experience with micro architecture design for custom accelerators.
  • Experience in deep learning research, algorithms, and data structures.
  • Experience in design and test of integrated circuit IP for AI/ML applications.
  • Experience with emerging analog memory devices for computing applications such as memristor, ReRAM, PCM, and others.
  • Experience in system software, GPU acceleration, DL model execution and performance optimization.
  • Self-motivated, pro-active, with leadership qualities.
  • Ability to work with ambiguity.
  • Demonstrated effective communication and collaboration skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to generate, frame, and carry out leadership research as shown, for example, by papers published in top-tier conferences or journals.
