Job Description

Hewlett Packard Labs - Machine Learning Research Associate Intern

This role has been designated as Office, which means you will primarily work from an HPE office.

Job Description:

At HPE, we bring together the brightest minds to create breakthrough technology solutions and advance the way people live and work. Our legacy inspires us as we forge ahead dedicated to helping our customers make their mark on the world.

Learning does not only happen through training. Relationships are among the most powerful ways for people to learn and grow, and this is part of our HPE culture. In addition to working alongside talented colleagues, you will have many opportunities to learn through coaching and stretch assignment opportunities. You’ll be guided by feedback and support to accelerate your learning and maximize your knowledge. We also have a “reverse mentoring” program which allows us to share our knowledge and strengths across our multi-generation workforce.

The internship provides an opportunity to research on Reinforcement Learning and other emerging areas of Machine Learning with a team at Hewlett Packard Labs, the principal research organization at HPE in its San Francisco Bay area. This also gives an opportunity to make impactful publications on Machine Learning with a team that has published on top machine learning conferences with a recent award winning paper. Most of our research focus on solving critical challenges in clean energy, sustainability, and trustworthy AI.

We are currently seeking highly qualified, self-motivated interns to accelerate research towards new applications, core methodologies, and technologies in the emerging areas of Machine Learning at Hewlett Packard Labs.

Hewlett Packard Labs is an international research organization with its headquarters and largest facility located in Milpitas, California. As the central research organization for Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), Hewlett Packard Labs' purpose is to deliver breakthrough technologies and technology advancements that provide a competitive advantage for the company, by investing in fundamental science and technology in areas of interest to HPE and getting the resulting technologies ready for adoption into new and existing markets.

The Artificial Intelligence Research Lab focuses on researching and developing technologies, architectures, and software to develop cutting-edge solutions in key areas of Deep Learning and Machine Learning, including Reinforcement Learning, Trustworthy AI, Auto ML, and GANs. This is a unique opportunity to work at a start-up pace within a big company. We are looking for an entrepreneurial mindset, and a deep passion to take an ML problem and conduct research, and come up with a solution with a fast turnaround time. You will have an opportunity to work with Machine Learning experts who have made multiple successful products and will get guidance and coaching in different areas including software engineering, hardware optimizations, data pipelining, and innovations from the latest AI research to bring hardened Deep Learning solutions to the real world. It will also involve working with Deep Learning frameworks and models, GPU acceleration, Model optimization, real-time streaming data, distributed computing, and deployment. We are seeking highly qualified candidates to come join one of our research teams as an intern, with the possibility of longer-term co-innovation and collaboration.

We expect all our researchers (including interns and post-docs) to provide thought leadership and technical influence both internally and externally to HPE, as well as take innovative ideas and make them real – contributing along with the full range from initial novel ideas to design, development, implementation, evaluation, and technology transfer. The ideal candidate can thrive in an applied research environment, balancing significant technical and scientific contributions with the ability to bring such contributions to practice through innovative solutions that address the needs of our customers and partners. We expect the successful candidate to collaborate with Hewlett Packard Labs research teams as well as with external partners, and to work in alignment with HPE's broader innovation community. Excellent software systems building skills are a significant plus.

  • Track record of world-class innovative contributions and ideas in machine learning preferred.
  • Experience with innovative solution development, such as developing proofs-of-concept, or first-of-a-kind solutions preferred.

Technical Skills:

  • Experience in deep learning research
  • Experience in developing deep learning software with high proficiency in data structures and algorithms.
  • Strong programming skills and experience with Python
  • Software development experience in Deep Learning, GPU acceleration, and Model Optimization.
  • Experience in Deep Learning and Machine Learning frameworks and models like PyTorch or Tensorflow - required
  • Experience in system software, GPU acceleration, DL model execution, and performance optimization - desired
  • Experience in Neural Network architectures for Reinforcement Learning, Auto ML, GANs, or Trustworthy AI - desired
