Machine Learning Research Scientists and Engineers AI for Digital Pathology Applications (f/m/d) 

Meeting some of the most pressing healthcare and sustainability needs of our time, at Bayer we are leveraging the most advanced technologies to improve and save patient lives. The talented, young and international Machine Learning Research group in Berlin is seeking passionate research scientists and/or engineers (f/m/d) to join our team. Together we will develop innovative computer vision and multi-modal machine learning applications in digital pathology to support drug discovery and clinical decisions. 

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Be an active member of a highly interdisciplinary machine learning team
  • Contribute to the implementation of a deep learning platform to leverage massive histopathological image datasets using deep learning
  • Develop innovative supervised and weakly supervised machine learning methods to support tasks like quality control or diagnosis
  • Develop explainable AI techniques for biomarker discovery, model evaluation, and regulatory purposes, avoiding “black box” solutions and increasing the acceptance of the models by pathologists and clinicians
  • Deploy efficiently machine learning models to the cloud and to the desktop. Design beautiful user experiences for machine learning in computer vision and digital pathology, enabling equally data scientists and pathologists with human-in-the-loop refinement of models. Contribute to our current portfolio of well-regarded open-source libraries for digital pathology
  • Represent Bayer in a large cross-industry and academic consortium pooling AI-grade data within a well-funded European project
  • Join forces with other machine learning and engineering teams to bring together expertise into integrative projects involving different modalities like small molecules, biomolecules, and cellular or medical images
  • Collaborate closely with subject matter experts, teaching, learning, creating trust and fostering adoption. Strengthen external visibility and scientific excellence through contribution to open-source projects, publishing and engaging with the scientific community

WHO YOU ARE 

  • A highly scientific and technical profile with a PhD degree or an equivalent MSc degree with several years of working experience, and a sincere interest for computational life sciences
  • Hands-on experience with computer vision and relevant machine learning methodologies such as convolutional neural networks, graph neural networks, transformers or generative modelling. Experience applying machine learning to digital pathology or medical images is an advantage
  • Exposure to model explainability concepts. Practical implementations of such concepts in any field would be of advantage
  • Excellent technical and software engineering skills. Experience building efficient and reusable software. Experience building data exploration and machine learning tools for final users would be of advantage
  • Expertise in python and its scientific ecosystem, with intimate knowledge of relevant libraries (e.g., deep learning frameworks, computer vision libraries, visualization or dashboarding). Good command of modern software engineering tools like git, python packaging or continuous integration pipelines is a big plus
  • Strong interpersonal skills, excellent written and verbal communication, and the ability to work effectively both independently and in cross-functional teams
  • Fluency in English written and spoken
