Job Description

The primary responsibilities of this role, Staff Geospatial Data Engineer are to:

  • Lead and participate in design sessions with Enterprise and Hub Data Stewards, Engineering teams, Data Scientists, Product Managers, business and IT stakeholders, that result in design documentation for geospatial data processing, storage, cleansing, publishing, and delivery solutions (including IoT solutions to stream data from sensors globally);
  • Design and implement insights driven solutions based on imagery, field observations, and environmental layers to fulfill the needs of a modern digital farming platform;
  • Participate in evaluation of new geospatial technologies, like GeoTrellis or GCP BigQuery, or new languages, like Go or React, including POCs;
  • Understand business capability needs and processes as they relate to IT solutions through partnering with Product Managers and business and functional IT stakeholders;
  • Implement specific geospatial data solutions according to design documentation using a variety of tools and programming languages, like Kafka, SQL and non-SQL databases, Scala, Go etc., and following team’s established processes and methodologies, like SCRUM or Kanban;
  • Participate in code reviews, retrospectives, functional and integration testing and other team activities focused on improving quality of delivery;
  • Collaborate with other data engineers and data stewards within the team and across data, technical platforms and product teams on aligning delivery dates and integration efforts;
  • Represent the team at various cross team meetings and events focused on design and planning, like Scrum of Scrums and Release Planning, sharing the results of team efforts, or brainstorming on process improvements;

  • Mentor junior and aspiring Geospatial Data Engineers on the team and across the data community;

  • Create and maintain code documentation in GitHub, Haystack, SharePoint and/or another repositories used by the team;
  • Facilitate various cross team efforts, like Scrum of Scrums and Release Planning, focused on large scale roadmap alignments, sharing information, solving broad variety of problems, or improving processes;
  • Discuss work or provide detail to the right level of audience, business partners, data scientists, engineering teams etc.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field, with 6+ years of professional software engineering experience or Master's degree with at least four years of relevant experience or Ph.D. with at least two years of relevant experience, or at least 10 years of relevant experience is an acceptable substitute for degree;
  • At least five years of experience in engineering data intensive software using streaming and resource based design principles and OGC formats (WMS/WFS, others);
  • At least five years of experience with Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) such as GeoTrellis/Geoserver/GeoMesa/Rasterio, Google Maps, MapBox, or CartoDB;
  • At least three years of experience with GDAL/QGIS and basic mapping JS libraries such as Open Layers;
  • At least four years fluency in different programming or scripting languages such as Java, C++, PHP, Ruby, Python;
  • Experience processing both vector and raster data formats such as shp, GeoJSON, GeoHash, GeoTiff, NetCDF, PNG, JPG and others;
  • Proficiency in working with relational databases such as Postgres, MySQL, Oracle, etc. and geospatial libraries such as GDAL;
  • Experience working with geospatial no-SQL data stores such as Apache Accumulo;
  • Proven experience modeling large datasets in distributed databases such as Apache Cassandra;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and desire to work in a highly collaborative environment;
  • Familiarity with the relevant industry trends.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Agriculture, life sciences, bioinformatics, biochemistry, genetics, biology, or a related disciplines;
  • Experience in Platform-as-a-Service software such as Cloud Foundry or Kubernetes ;
  • Experience in stream processing, e.g. Kafka, Spark Streaming, Akka, etc.;
  • Knowledge of machine learning or other data science practices;
  • Experience contributing to open source projects.
