Job Description

The primary responsibilities of this role, (Staff Data Engineer), are to:

• Lead and participate in design sessions with Enterprise and Hub Data Stewards, Engineering teams, Data Scientists, Product Managers, business and IT stakeholders, which results in documentation for data processing, storage and delivery solutions;
• Provide recommendations for new technologies and languages such as Domino, Redshift, Go, and React;
• Perform POCs and present results to others, with a goal of providing technical suggestions;
• Improve processes and methodologies, like SCRUM or Kanban;
• Experience in data solutions using various tools and programming languages such as: like Kafka, SQL and non-SQL databases, Scala, Go etc.;
• Facilitate code reviews, retrospectives, functional and integration testing while focused on improving quality of delivery;
• Provide reliable estimates for large scale projects;
• Collaborate with product owners, engineers, and data stewards to align roadmaps, deliver dates, and integrate efforts;
• Mentor junior and aspiring Data Engineers on the team and across communities;
• Manage various cross team efforts, like Scrum of Scrums and Release Planning;
• Communicate assignments and provide details to business partners, data scientists, engineering teams, etc.;
• Create design and code documentation in GitHub, Haystack, SharePoint and repositories used by the team.

Required qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field, with eight years professional software engineering experience or Master's with five years of relevant experience or PhD with three years of relevant experience or 12 years of relevant experience is an acceptable substitute for degree requirement;
• Professional software engineering experience to include: five years experience in engineering data intensive software using streaming and resource based design principles;
• Three years experience in at least one NoSQL database, such as Neo4j, Cassandra, etc.;
• Five years fluency in an object oriented or functional language such as Java, Scala, Go, etc.;
• Demonstrate with data architecture and modeling, which includes designing logical and physical models for datasets;
• Proficient in working with relational databases such as Postgres, MySQL, Oracle, etc.;
• Proven experience with modeling large datasets in distributed databases such as Apache Cassandra;
• Strong interpersonal skills and desire to work in a highly collaborative environment;
• Platform as a Service software such as Cloud Foundry or Kubernetes;
• Stream processing such as Kafka, Spark Streaming, Akka, etc.;
• Knowledge of machine learning or other data science practices;
• Experience in contributing to open source projects.

Preferred qualifications:

• Agriculture, life sciences, bioinformatics, biochemistry, genetics, biology, or other related disciplines.
