Job Description
We seek a Postdoctoral Research Scientist to contribute to these efforts. Given our broad, interdisciplinary research, we are casting a wide net, spanning experts in engineering disciplines to psychophysics. However, we currently have a particular interest in two types of candidates. On one hand, we are looking for an individual with the right background to contribute to near-eye holographic display systems, e.g., leading the hardware-software prototyping and optimization of bench-top demonstrators. On the other hand, we are seeking a researcher that is an expert in human vision science, ideally with a background that involves conducting psychophysical studies of the human vision system using novel display hardware. Some candidates may have interests and experience in both of these domains. We will shape the postdoctoral research program to fit the individual, while driving DSR’s larger mission forward.
Postdoctoral Research Scientist, Display Systems (PhD) Responsibilities
- Design, build, demonstrate, and study display system prototypes
- Conceive, implement, and analyze demos and/or psychophysical user studies on both bench-top testbeds and head-mounted prototypes to help guide emerging AR/VR/MR display and imaging technologies
- Collaborate with cross-disciplinary team members from prototyping through tech transfer
- Contribute research that can be applied to Meta AR/VR/MR product development and industry-leading publications
Minimum Qualifications
- Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Degree must be completed prior to joining Meta.
- Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a PhD degree in Optical Engineering, Vision Science, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related fields
- Interpersonal experience with cross-group and cross-culture collaboration
- 3+ years of experience in Python, Matlab, or similar high-level programming languages
- Proven track record of achieving significant results, as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, or first-authored publications at leading workshops or conferences (e.g., SIGGRAPH, Journal of Vision, OSA, and SPIE)
- Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment
Preferred Qualifications
- For the near-eye holography track: Familiarity with state of the art research in near-eye holographic displays, including camera-in-the-loop, time multiplexing, étendue expansion, and pupil-invariant holography methods.
- For the near-eye holography track: Previous experience assembling, calibrating, and testing experimental holography systems in a laboratory setting
- For the near-eye holography track: Experience implementing computer-generated holography (CGH) optimization algorithms using automatic differentiation packages (e.g., Pytorch and/or TensorFlow)
- For the applied vision science track: Demonstrated experience leveraging vision science data and principles to inform visual perception research in applied settings, especially for head-mounted displays
- For the applied vision science track: Previous experience with bench-top stereoscopic displays, head-mounted displays, or other custom hardware to study visual perception (e.g., novel 3D display systems such as multifocal displays, adaptive optics, mobile 3D environment mapping with gaze tracking, and advanced eye tracking systems)
- For the applied vision science track: Previous experience with Unity/C# or C++ to run psychophysical experiments
- For the applied vision science track: Previous experience with probabilistic modeling and Gaussian processes in the context of visual psychophysics
