The opportunity

eBay is looking for an innovative AI leader who will lead the software engineering of eBay’s AI ML platform/Infrastructure and Core AI’s novel AI products end-to-end. The Sr. Director of AI ML Engineering will be accountable for Core AI’s engineering vision and delivery roadmap that helps eBay be an AI-first company through bold intelligent experiences for our customers and scalable platforms that support teams across the company with an extremely broad array of AI use-cases.

As part of eBay’s tech-led reimagination, the new Core AI organization is the central driver of the company’s overall AI strategy. As such, this is a critical hire for the Product and Technology leadership teams. Reporting to eBay’s Chief AI Officer, this role will own enterprise-wide AI engineering technology requirements, processes, and best practices. S/he will define key functionalities; set timelines, and lead end-to-end initiatives across the company.

The ideal candidate will have previously built robust, scalable platforms to manage the entire ML lifecycle including ML serving Infra, model training/deployment, inference optimization, as well as AI-based customer-facing products end-to-end. S/he will have demonstrated engineering leadership in an AI organization with significant experience in productionization of ML models and AI solutions on large scale, high performance real-time systems. The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to thrive in highly matrixed organizations, collaborating with a broad range of teams.

Key responsibilities:

• Create the engineering vision and strategy for eBay’s core AI platforms, capabilities, and products.

• Lead the delivery planning for the Core AI roadmap to drive aggressive time-to-market goals.

• Oversee the technical decisions, ML model serving infra, GPU inference optimization, technology choices and architecture for a wide range of high performance real-time AI products, capabilities, and platforms, effectively balancing short-term impact with long-term transformation.

• Partner with the Core AI Leadership Team in the development of internal platforms and capabilities, that set a new user experience benchmark for interactive online shopping.

• Partner closely with Product, Science and other key stakeholders to deliver end-to-end experiences

• Recruit, develop and mentor world-class talent.

Requirements:

• 15+ years of experience as an engineering leader, at the forefront of emerging technologies at scale, leveraging the power of data, analytics, and AI to deliver magical experiences for customers

• Experience with High-performance clusters (HPC), ML serving Infrastructure, inference Platformization/optimization. Nice to have GenAI, LLMs experience

• Proven leadership experience in developing complex, real-time AI products at scale in a matrixed global organization.

• Track record of leading the engineering of successful and widely respected consumer web and mobile products.

• End-to-end development experience in several areas of AI, such as Computer Vision, NLP, Recommender Systems, and Forecasting.

• Experience building and shipping large-scale online services for consumers.

• Track record of developing solid working relationships with partners.

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment in California, Washington, or New York is expected in the range below.

$206,400 - $332,750

Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including location, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a target bonus and restricted stock units (as applicable) in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as PTO and parental leave). Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.

If hired, employees will be in an at-will position and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
