Job Description

The Immunology and Cardiovascular Thematic Research Center (ICV-TRC) is focused on discovering and developing novel therapeutics to treat inflammatory and cardiovascular diseases. The Translation Early Development/ Immunology Research lab within the ICV-TRC is seeking an intern to carry out biomarker studies in human samples.

The summer intern will participate in an ongoing program in a dynamic small research group and should be capable of working in a fast-paced environment. They will gain an understanding of translational work needed to support drug discovery and identify appropriate disease indications for a drug.

The individual will be working in the lab to identify disease markers and cell subsets in tissue samples and observe histological changes in those samples. The intern will investigate various inflammatory/disease markers and will learn to analyze data and present at lab meetings.

The individual will also realize the importance of teamwork in a lab environment. Strong problem solving and time management skills are essential to complete diverse assigned tasks. Knowledge and skills in programming and analysis of big data sets are a plus. The ideal candidate will be an undergraduate going into Junior or Senior year, with a biology (or relevant life sciences) major and minimum 3.0 GPA.

Key Responsibilities

  • Under supervision, carry out variety of cellular assays, generating high-quality data to help in biomarker studies for ongoing programs
  • Use instrumentation to perform basic experiments
  • Record experimental details
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, supplies and notebook
  • Analyze data and support the translational research program

Qualifications & Experience

  • Proficiency in molecular and cell biology laboratory techniques
  • Proficiency with Microsoft office applications
  • Possess knowledge of experimental design and underlying scientific principles
  • Knowledge and skills in programming and analysis of big data set preferable
  • Excellent organizational, record keeping, oral and written communication skills
  • Team player, detail oriented and organized
  • Ability to follow directions to complete assigned tasks under close supervision
  • Willingness to report problems and solicit directions from Supervisor
  • Ability to work in context of immediate work group or team
