Position Summary

The Integrated Technologies & Engineering team in Drug Product Development is seeking a diligent, curious, collaborative engineer/scientist with a passion for leveraging technology to extend and enhance patient lives, with a focus on experimental design, experimental execution, and automation. The successful candidate excels in a collaborative, cross-functional, matrix team environment to enable the development of new drug products for pharmaceutics, biologics, and emerging modalities through the development and application of enabling technologies. 

This scientist is primarily responsible for designing and performing scale down and automation experiments to assess risks related to drug formulation and processing. The successful candidate has strong engineering fundamentals, robust data hygiene and organization habits, laboratory and/or manufacturing experience in drug product processing, understanding of formulation science fundamentals, enthusiasm for applying digital technology in new ways, and strong collaboration and communication skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute minipiloting/scale-down experiments to develop product understanding and control, and develop new tools to yield further insight.
  • Harness automated technology (liquid handling robots) to improve the efficiency and quality of formulation and process development.
  • Ownership of laboratory equipment, technologies, and workflows including troubleshooting and continuous improvement (may include collaboration with vendors, applying relevant programming languages, optimizing data aggregation, finding innovative solutions, filling knowledge gaps)
  • Facilitate problem solving using scientific, engineering, analytical, and laboratory techniques to support drug product development from early development to product launch as a member of a multidisciplinary project team.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new techniques and applies these to address cross functional development challenges.  
  • Collaborate with formulation and process development teams to provide data for product commercialization and new technologies, and to optimize or enhance existing products or processes
  • Follow all safety, regulatory, and compliance standards as they relate to the development of pharmaceuticals

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelors / Masters with 3-5 years experience or entry-level Ph.D. within a scientific or engineering discipline is required. Practical experience directly relevant to the role is valuable for success and minimum degree requirements change relative to experience.
  • 0-5 years of experience in drug product development and problem solving in the pharmaceutical or other life science industry and/or experience with modeling, implementing digital technology into laboratory/processing environments (see above).
  • Working knowledge of key pharmaceutical unit operations both in drug substance and drug product including, but not limited to parenteral ultrafiltration/diafiltration, buffer exchange, vial filling, lyophilization, and stability analysis. Laboratory hands-on experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal, collaborative, team-building, and communication skills to ensure effective collaborations within matrix teams. 
  • Demonstrated impact with engineering fundamentals and tools on project development.

Other Preferred Skills:

  • Proficient in programming languages such as Matlab, Python, C++, and R. 
  • Familiarity with a variety of analytical/material characterization techniques and PAT tools.
  • Advanced math, statistics, or data science competency.
