About Your Opportunity:

The Data Science Manager is an experienced, hands-on Data Scientist to support our customer mission requirements through research and development, alongside managing the Data Science team. The Data Science Manager takes the lead for managing a team who work across the spectrum of Research, Data Science, and Machine Learning Engineering/Capability Development.

The Data Science Manager is a Subject Matter Expert in at least one Data Science field, and is able to bring a wide range of experience to the domain. Looking to understand technology trends, risks and opportunities, to bring a clear-eyed view as to what should be adopted now and in the future.

Internally the Data Science Manager will act as the focal point for data science, be a leader and mentor to the data science team, supported by the Data Science Practice lead to develop and chart the career growth of the team. Externally, they will demonstrate thought leadership to our clients and be instrumental in the development of new business, stimulated from client intimacy and furthering our current innovation culture.

Your Responsibilities:

Technical Leadership

  • Contribute to shaping our clients’ technical direction, projecting thought leadership, prioritising time with clients to gain mission intimacy and to increase Northrop Grumman’s technical ‘presence’.
  • Use customer domain experience to shape the development and scope of work, challenging ways of working and driving improvement where appropriate.
  • Lead the design, planning, development/research and testing of Data Science and Machine Learning capabilities
  • Responsible for the quality of project team deliverables, providing overall assurance of tasked work.
  • Provide top level technical mentoring/leadership cover for the data science team across their respective projects.
  • Write and contribute to technical responses for Business Development purposes.

Resourcing & Workforce Management

  • Responsible for the leadership and management of the Data Science workforce aligned to the Account.
  • Support the Engineering Authority in the development and maintenance of workforce plans within the Account, providing Data Science team input.
  • Provide career progression in alignment to the relevant competency framework & expected behaviours, and NG Leadership Characteristics. Promoting the Data Science Practice for the associated materials to support career discussions and development.
  • Supporting the Data Science Practice Lead in the development or implementation of initiatives or materials, where required through either support resources, partnership and or promoting general workforce engagement or participation in the Practice.
  • Work with the Engineering Authority to deliver a team that meets the OU vision and strategy through structured training and recruitment.
  • Working with the Account Lead and Engineering Authority to ensure that the Data Science team are fully focused on driving ‘Time on Mission’. Working with their teams to drive the education and awareness required to support our employee’s ability to be working on mission and accurate time reporting.

General Operational duties

  • Ensure business successes are actively identified and celebrated (both teams and individuals).
  • Have a good understanding of business processes and be able to provide guidance to teams.
  • Remain compliant with all applicable policies and procedures.
  • Act as a role model, exhibiting NG’s values at all times.
  • Act as a Northrop Grumman Brand Ambassador.
  • Actively promote diversity and inclusion.

Your Experience:

  • Demonstrable experience developing capabilities analysing large amounts of data to identify patterns / trends and building useable and value-added data products that facilitate effective decision making.
  • Proven track record of conducting high-quality research in the field of Generative AI, demonstrated through publications in top-tier conferences or journals.
  • Experience in large language modelling techniques, such as Transformer-based models (e.g., GPT, BERT) and their applications to generative tasks.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, along with experience in deep learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch).
  • Experience with multimodal learning and integrating different modalities (text, images, audio) into generative models is highly desirable.
  • Solid understanding of natural language processing techniques, including semantic understanding, entity recognition, and sentiment analysis.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically and creatively to tackle complex research challenges.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively present research findings and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
