Job Description

At GSK we see a world in which advanced applications of Machine Learning and AI will allow us to develop transformational medicines using the power of genetics, functional genomics and machine learning. AI will also play a role in how we diagnose and use medicines to enable everyone to do more feel better and live longer. It is an ambitious vision that will require the development of products at the cutting edge of Machine Learning and AI.

We are using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to develop new therapies and personalized drugs that drive better outcomes for patients at reduced cost with fewer side effects. Because the datasets we use and algorithms we build at each step of the drug development journey have safety and ethical implications for our patients, GSK has a dedicated team working on the responsible use of AI in healthcare. If this excites you and you want to be part of our growing team, we would love to chat.

The AI/ML team is built on the principles of ownership, accountability, continuous development, and collaboration. We hire for the long term, and we're motivated to make this a great place to work. Our leaders will be committed to your career from day one, supporting individuals in dedicating 20% of their time towards personal development.

In 2021 we delivered four major product approvals: Cabenuva for HIV, Jemperli for endometrial cancer, Xevudy for COVID-19 and Apretude, our new long-acting medicine for HIV prevention.

Our departments and role types we have available

Target Triage: Target triage team applies machine learning and AI methods to large-scale genetic, genomic, and clinical datasets to systematically identify and rank the best targets to pursue for preclinical development in a particular disease area. Improved target triage has the potential to be transformative in drug discovery and early development, empowering scientists to make better and faster data-driven decisions about potential targets.

AI Research: The active learning team is a research-driven team based in London. We are focused on building AI/ML tools on the topics of active learning, self-supervised learning, intelligent sampling algorithms, and creating data efficient models to support multiple large-scale projects within AI/ML. Our work involves both theoretical methods-development in these areas, as well as building application-specific products.

In addition, our departments include; Policy & Ethics, Casual Machine Learning, Biomedical AI, Computational Pathology, Applied AI, Precision Oncology, Cell Imaging, AI product, Sequence Learning, Clinical Imaging & AI Operations

UK Hiring Locations: Stanley building, London Kings cross

Remote Working: A variety of flexible working arrangements are available

Our roles

Senior Software engineer

To help us make this future a reality, we are looking for Software Engineers that have a track record in developing production grade AI-powered software solutions. Software Engineers at GSK are outstanding engineers with in-depth knowledge in modern software craftsmanship practices and a keen interest in making a positive impact in healthcare.

In this role you will (role/grade dependent):

  • Lead the hands-on development of data-driven software solutions, taking responsibility for requirements engineering, software?architecture?design, implementation, testing, integration, and maintenance.
  • Collaborate with AI/ML experts to develop modular, reusable, and scalable deep learning pipelines.
  • Liaise with experts in biology, medicine and experimentation to ensure fit-for-purpose programming interfaces and data pipelines for data-driven software projects
  • Mentor/coach AI/ML?Engineers in software engineering best practices.
  • Deliver robust, tested, and performant code in an agile development environment.
  • Convert vaguely described biological/drug discovery challenges into well-defined machine learning problem.
  • Independently execute and deliver full AI/ML driven solution from sourcing training data, design and implementing SOTA machine learning models, testing, benchmarking, and product driven research for model performance improvement, to shipping stable, tested, performant code and services in an agile environment
  • Lead and ensure best machine learning practice
  • Work as part of a highly interdisciplinary team

Senior AI/ML Engineer

The opportunities for machine learning extend to many other areas of our business, including medicine safety, manufacturing, and supply chain. To realize these opportunities, GSK has created a global Artificial Intelligence and Machine learning group (AI/ML), with locations in London, San Francisco, Boston, Philadelphia, Tel Aviv, and Heidelberg, to focus on the development and application of machine learning to problems of critical importance at GSK. We possess a world-leading data and computational environment (including specialist hardware) to enable large-scale, scientific experiments that exploit GSK’s unique access to data.

By actively engaging with the machine learning community and publishing our research, code and models built on public data, the AI/ML group operates at the cutting-edge of machine learning research. To help us, we seek a passionate, early-career machine learning scientist who wishes to turn their talents to the healthcare sector, with a focus on immuno-oncology. You will be working with multiple Research Engineers on building products to support multiple large-scale projects within AI/ML. In addition, the researcher will learn about the pharmaceutical industry and software engineering and translate their research into tools that aid discovery and development of transformational medicines.

In this role you will (role/grade dependent):

  • Apply state-of-the-art ML methods to problems on challenging biomedical datasets.
  • Deliver robust, tested and performant code in an agile development environment.
  • Contribute to ML research on the responsible use of AI in drug discovery and in clinical applications.
  • Design, develop, test, document and maintain platform services, tools, and infrastructure
  • Continuously scale and enhance operational efficiencies around platform’s CI/CD capabilities
  • Design and implement novel scientific approaches to uncover and explain key relationships within a multitude of biological data types
  • Leverage data and insights to produce robust, explainable, and accurate predictions across a variety of key biological and clinical tasks
  • Identify opportunities to apply the latest advancements in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence to build, test, and validate predictive models
  • Develop and embed automated processes for predictive model validation, deployment, and implementation
  • Take ownership of, design and implement AI/ML-driven solutions along the entire model development life cycle.
  • Research and develop state-of-the-art machine learning models, including deep learning models, to optimize model performance on a range of biomedical prediction tasks.
  • Lead early project definition and scoping together with domain experts across the company.
  • Liaise with experts in biology, medicine and experimentation to ensure optimal collection of data to train biomedical machine learning models.
