Job Description

Are you looking for an opportunity to combine viral genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics to discover new prognostic and therapeutic vaccines? If so, this is the role for you.

As Senior Data Scientist you will integrate and analyze complex, high dimensional data sets to extract biological knowledge relevant for Vaccines R&D.

You will ensure advanced data analytics and bioinformatics deliverables for Vaccines R&D projects are at the top of research and industry standards with respect to scientific excellence, quality and timelines.

The Vaccines Discovery Data Science Center of Excellence (Vx DDS CoE) is an experienced team of data scientists that fosters excellence in computer science, immunology, mathematics, and statistics to conduct data driven discoveries enabling the research and development of modern vaccines.

The Viral Computational Genomics team (VCG) as part of Vx DDS CoE is bringing data science to scientists and viral vaccine projects to innovate, provide novel insights, and drive decision making.

This role will provide YOU the opportunity to lead key activities to progress YOUR career. These responsibilities include some of the following:

  • Represent Discovery Data Sciences as subject matter expert in projects teams.
  • Advise on study design, readout selection and data formats, data analysis strategies.
  • Provide input to the Discovery Data Sciences scientific strategy, processes, and objectives in alignment with the GSK Vaccines R&D strategy.
  • Prepare and publish scientific papers and congress reports.
  • Perform and lead up to two PhD students / post-docs for:
    • viral computational genomics/data analytics activities for Vaccines R&D.
    • exploratory data and knowledge integration for hypothesis generation.
    • data modeling for innovative assays, high-dimensional readouts, and viral genomics.
    • development of tailored systems and analytical models for explorative analytics of pre-clinical, clinical, and epidemiological data.
  • Foster innovation within Discovery Data Sciences and keep abreast of the new and most recent developments and innovations in the fields relevant for the role.
  • Communicate Discovery Data Sciences activities, results, and principles to internal stakeholders and scientific community, translating complex solutions into simple, understandable, and effective messages.
  • Lead or coordinate scientific interactions with multiple partners or international collaborations outside GSK Vaccines.

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant scientific experience, including two years of direct/matrix people management and international leadership responsibilities (e.g., principal investigator for international R&D projects in relevant areas)
  • Strong publication record in at least one of the following areas:
    • computational and molecular epidemiology
    • bioinformatics and genomics
    • data mining and machine learning
    • computational / dynamic modeling
    • multidimensional biomarkers discovery and validation
  • Strong programming, data analytics and modeling skills
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving, change management and project delivery skills
  • Good knowledge of vendors and state-of-the-art solutions for Data Science analytics
  • Excellent English, written

Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • Good line management skills
  • Good understanding of the Vaccine R&D practices, and data presentation across preclinical, clinical and epidemiology domains
  • Good Leadership skills in a scientific cross-functional environment
  • Good communication skills, ability to simplify complex problems and communicate complex solutions in a simple and effective manner
  • Ability to influence performance in a matrix organization through negotiation and communication
  • PhD in bioinformatics, bioengineering, molecular biology, computational life sciences or related field
  • Experience with vaccine design against bacteria and/or viruses
  • Experience with machine learning, especially deep learning
  • Experience with NGS data pipelines and analysis
  • Ability to adjust behavior and priorities based on changing environment
  • Good networking skills and fluent interactions with one or more scientific communities
  • Cultural sensitivity
  • Spoken and written English, French, or Italian
