Job Description
The Portfolio Data Science group is a dedicated unit within the R&D Strategy and Portfolio Analytics function, who’s vision is to act as Analytical change agents to revolutionise the way R&D makes portfolio decisions. Specifically, the group is accountable for:
Embodying the Science of portfolio management, by:
- Building and owning best in class statistical methodologies for solving portfolio management problems
- Constantly innovating to answer hereto untapped portfolio questions.
- Peer reviewing methods to ensure accuracy
Driving Technology within portfolio management, by:
- Leading the design of a comprehensive Data Strategy for the portfolio team.
- Thinking forward to design for the future (18months+) technology and analytical needs of the group in addition to those of today.
- Building technology-based solutions which are optimised to workflows.
- Designing user centric applications to enable analytics to be available at the point of decision.
Leading a data-based portfolio management culture, by:
- Building structured partnerships with supporting organisations across R&D (e.g. Technology/Clinical Statistics/Finance/Commercial)
- Driving a data/toolkit first mindset to problem solving within portfolio.
- Delivering training to build capability excellence within the portfolio group.
?Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to
- Contract with stakeholders across Strategy and Portfolio to ensure the right portfolio of work for the data science group and work with senior leaders to prioritise and resource the data science portfolio.
- Support the team as an expert in designing solutions for the data science portfolio
- Effectively manage the team of (4-6) technical data science professionals to deliver against the prioritised portfolio of activities.
- Directly deliver ad-hoc analytics projects that span multiple use cases or exploratory analyses that are built on potentially large data sets.
- Act as a member of the Portfolio Analytics LT.
- Build sustainable technology solutions to continuously improve ways of working for the Strategy and Portfolio Group.
- Own the Strategy and Portfolio data strategy and act as the owner of key Portfolio systems.
- Proactively ensure consistent methodologies across use cases and R&D organisations.
- Build and maintain relationships across R&D and broader GSK, including, Biostatistics and R&D Tech, Commercial, Finance and externally.
- Represent the analysis of the group in discussions with senior leadership.

Basic Qualifications:??
We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:?
- BSc in a quantitative discipline or equivalent experience.
- Significant experience applying Data Science to answer business questions & provide actionable recommendations within a diverse environment.
- Good understanding of metrics used to assess and prioritise major financial decisions, including ROI calculation.
- Demonstrated and current expertise in both theory and practical application of Cloud computing approaches.
- Proven direct experience in the use of analytical tools, such as Python, R, Spark etc to develop models.
- Direct experience of developing visualisation using diverse tools e.g. Spotfire.
- Hands-on experience building retrospective and predictive models including clustering, classification, prioritisation, optimisation, association to solve business issues
- Ability to drive complex enterprise- wide change initiatives with executive level stakeholders
- Proven experience leading and managing technical teams
Preferred Qualifications:??
If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:??
- MSc/PhD in statistics, maths, data science/ engineering or other quantitative decision sciences.
- Preferred experience leading analytics in an R&D setting.
- Excellent interpersonal & communication skills, with strong customer focus and the capability to influence at different levels in the organization, with need to build strong relationships and networks across the organization and externally.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities with a commitment to delivering on-time and quality results.
- Experience working with offshore teams for data processing & reporting.
