Description:The Advanced Technology Laboratories (ATL) is a Lockheed Martin applied research and development center. Aligned with the Corporation’s Chief Technology Officer, we work to advance scientific discovery and technology transition in human systems, robotics and autonomy, spectrum systems, data analytics and more!

The Chief Scientist for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) will drive creation of relevant long-term technology roadmaps for ATL, propose internal investments to build new capabilities, create new strategic partnerships with universities, commercial companies, and US government R&D organizations, and support acquisition of new business. To ensure alignment with LM Business Area (BA) strategies, the Chief Scientist will work closely with senior technical staff (including LM Fellows) from ATL, LM Artificial Intelligence Center (LAIC), and LM BA R&D organizations to create long-term AI/ML roadmaps. To help build new AI/ML capabilities within ATL, the Chief Scientist will lead definition of the technical content for strategic AI/ML internal R&D projects and be responsible for the quality of their execution. It is expected that initial focus of the Chief Scientist will be on Neuro-Symbolic Reasoning applied to sense making in autonomy and battle management. The Chief Scientist will engage with universities to identify relevant emerging new technologies, promote research directions aligned with LM strategic roadmaps, create new partnerships with faculty for joint research projects, and strengthen future talent pipeline for ATL. The Chief Scientist will also engage with US Gov. R&D organizations including DoD laboratories (including AFRL, ARL, and NRL) and Science & Technology funding organizations (including DARPA) to drive acquisition of new business for ATL with support from ATL laboratories.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated technical excellence in core AI/ML technical areas is required. These areas include machine learning and machine reasoning. Expertise in deep neural networks and reinforcement learning is required.
  • Demonstrated technical excellence in application of advanced AI/ML methods to sense making and decision making under uncertainty and ambiguity.
  • Record of successful engagement with US Gov. R&D organizations, including DoD laboratories and funding organizations, leading customer shaping and winning proposal efforts.
  • Record of partnering with universities for talent acquisition and joint proposal.
  • Record of securing internal funding for new R&D concepts.
  • Record of leading technology transitions to products.
  • Experience in mentoring junior technical staff (technical and resource acquisition).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • MS with 14 years of experience or PhD with 10 years of experience (preferred) in an area of science or engineering relevant to AI/ML.
  • Eligibility to obtain USG Secret Clearance.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience in neuro-symbolic reasoning (3rd wave AI) is desired.
  • Experience in areas adjacent to AI/ML is desired. These areas include autonomy, human-machine symbiosis, battle management command and control (BMC2), large scale optimization, game theory, control and estimation theory, and uncertainty management.
  • Project management experience.

Ability to Work Remotely: Part-time Remote Telework: The employee selected for this position will work part of their work schedule remotely and part of their work schedule at a designated Lockheed Martin facility. The specific weekly schedule will be discussed during the hiring process.

Work Schedules: Lockheed Martin supports a variety of alternate work schedules that provide additional flexibility to our employees. Schedules range from standard 40 hours over a five day work week while others may be condensed. These condensed schedules provide employees with additional time away from the office and are in addition to our Paid Time off benefits.

Schedule for this Position: 4x10 hour day, 3 days off per week
