Job Description

Cruisers have the opportunity to grow and develop while learning from leaders at the forefront of their fields. With a culture of internal mobility, there's an opportunity to thrive in a variety of disciplines. This is a place for dreamers and doers to succeed.

If you are looking to play a part in making a positive impact in the world by advancing the revolutionary work of self-driving cars, join us.

The Motion Planning team creates the desired trajectory for the AV using high resolution trajectory optimization methods to produce trajectories that are dynamically feasible, satisfy constraints (such as obstacle avoidance) for safe driving, and are comfortable for the passengers. We work closely with the Maneuver Planning team on architectures for integrating contextual decision-making with high-fidelity trajectory optimization. We work with Vehicle Controls on vehicle modeling and control interfaces that ensure that the physical vehicle is able to smoothly and accurately execute the planned trajectory. Our algorithms are directly responsible for determining the trajectory of the AV, and thus our work is critically important for the success and safety of the Cruise product. Our work involves knowledge of the latest methods in numerical optimization, a deep understanding of vehicle dynamics and control, and awareness of all of the contextual nuances of human driving and higher level planning. We push the boundaries of numerical computation while ensuring the robustness needed to achieve safety in all real-world scenarios. We strive to build algorithms that are scalable and can be extended to new environments and platforms.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING:

  • Designing and implementing software features to improve the performance and capability of the Motion Planning stack.
  • Research and prototyping of potential new approaches to help us understand pros/cons and plan out future features aimed towards productionization.
  • Analyze performance and drive improvements of features using a variety of simulation frameworks
  • Data analysis and tool development that helps us assess performance or system behavior

WHAT YOU MUST HAVE:

  • MS or PhD (or relevant previous internship experience) in CS, EE, or ME, preferably with a focus on motion planning or control systems or related fields.
  • Experience programming in C++
  • Understanding of model predictive control, trajectory optimization, or relevant fields.
  • Familiarity with vehicle dynamics and/or control systems.
  • Excellent problem solving and collaboration skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

BONUS POINTS!

  • Experience with production quality C++ and modern SW engineering workflows and methods
  • Practical experience implementing and tuning model predictive control and/or trajectory optimization algorithms
  • Experience with autonomous vehicles
  • Experience with statistics and data analysis (SQL or similar), experience with Python or Matlab

The salary range for this position is $28.00 - 68.00/hour. Compensation will vary depending on location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. You may also be offered a bonus, restricted stock units, and benefits. These ranges are subject to change.
