About the role:

*This position can be based in Seattle or San Francisco.*

At Cruise, the Machine Learning Infrastructure organization (MLI) builds the essential tools, frameworks, and services used by every engineer at Cruise. MLI’s goal is to greatly accelerate the development cycle of AV engineers by building the infrastructure to process, analyze, and learn from the many petabytes of data coming from our AVs, simulated tests, and real time services, empowering engineers to focus on improving the car’s safety and performance.

As an Engineering Manager on this team, you will be responsible for actively setting the team direction, mentoring engineers, and developing a shared vision with input from the team, customers, and stakeholders. You will also conduct ongoing performance evaluations to recognize and promote top performers. Finally, you will hire the best talent to raise the performance bar in your team and Cruise.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Work closely with your manager, TPMs, PMs, PMTs, and customers to align on the team’s mission and priorities.
  • Work with technical lead(s) to set and communicate the technical direction for the team, and anticipate strategic and scaling-related challenges
  • Drive software engineering standard methodologies both within the team and across the company
  • Responsible for the overall tech health of the team’s systems. Ensure that policies and SLAs are honored through continuous auditing and monitoring.
  • Responsible for the quality of the team’s deliverables and ensuring that it meets customers expectations
  • Responsible for hiring, growing and developing a team of engineers
  • Foster a healthy and collaborative culture
  • Serve as an embodiment of Cruise’s values

What you must have:

  • 3+ years experience managing teams that support scalable production systems
  • 8+ years experience in software engineering roles
  • Experience with core GCP technologies such as Dataflow, BigQuery, Cloud SQL
  • Experience with big machine learning infrastructure teams
  • Bachelor's degree in CS, or equivalent real world experience

Bonus points!

  • Experience writing Go, or a desire to learn
  • Experience working with Docker and Kubernetes, especially for running GPU workloads
  • Experience writing modern production C++ and Python applications
