The Role

Moderna is seeking a highly motivated Data Scientist to join our Knowledge Management (KM) team within the R&D Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DSAI) group. This role will focus on natural language processing (NLP) for our internal databases and documents, leveraging both large language models and traditional information retrieval methods to develop solutions for stakeholders across R&D. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with the ML platform and software engineering teams to design and implement fit-for-purpose solutions.

We are looking for someone who is deeply curious, possesses excellent work ethic, and is keen on bringing novel mRNA therapeutics and vaccines to the market that will improve the lives of patients.

Here’s What You’ll Do

  • Execute on projects spanning text mining, information retrieval, document classification, summarization, and question-answering systems.
  • Contribute to various KM and NLP projects across the R&D spectrum, including text mining, information retrieval, document classification, summarization and question-answering systems.
  • Keep up to date with the latest state-of-the-art machine learning and NLP methods.
  • Work closely with other data scientists, engineers, and research scientists to foster collaboration and innovation.
  • Employ and encourage data science and software engineering best practices.
  • Communicate findings effectively, both internally and externally

Here’s What You’ll Need (Minimum Qualifications)

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, Engineering, Statistics, or related data-intensive discipline with 0-3 years of job relevant experience or a Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, Engineering, Statistics, or related data-intensive discipline with 4+ years of job relevant experience
  • Experience in NLP and Knowledge Management projects, preferably in an industry setting
  • Fluency in Python, especially the data scientific stack (Jupyter/Pandas/scikit-learn)
  • Working knowledge of relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL)

Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Familiarity with NLP and ML Python libraries, such as Scikit-Learn, Pytorch, NLTK, spaCy, and HuggingFace.
  • Exceptional communication skills (verbal, written, and remote)
  • Experience with industry-leading tools and techniques for information retrieval, such as Lucene, Solr, Elasticsearch or comparable systems.
  • Experience with large language models such as OpenAI's GPT series and understanding of their deployment in practical applications.
  • Familiarity with best practices in software development, including Amazon Web Services, Docker, version control (Git), and documentation.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and effectively collaborate in a dynamic, cross-functional environment.
