Job Description

Moderna is seeking a talented and motivated data scientist with a background in applying machine learning techniques to problems in Human Resources, Legal, and/or Finance to join our Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DSAI) team. As part of our mission to “Build The Digital Biotech Company”, we see a key role for DSAI in scaling and accelerating our general and administrative functions.

As a lead within the DSAI team, this role will collaborate with business leaders, software engineers, digital business partners to analyze large amounts of structured and unstructured data and

develop and deploy AI-driven methodology to streamline business processes of all sorts. We are looking for someone who is deeply curious, exhibits an excellent work ethic, and has a desire to bring novel mRNA therapeutics and vaccines to the market that will improve the lives of patients.

Here’s What You’ll Do:

• Support a wide variety of our core business functions via data analysis and visualization, statistical modeling, and machine learning
• Train and fine-tune natural language processing models on large public and proprietary text-based datasets for creative and transformative applications
• Identify impactful opportunities to apply recent advances in computer science and software engineering and keep up to date with the latest advances in the field
• Engage stakeholders to align project goals iteratively at every step of a project’s life cycle, including data procurement, modeling methodology, validation, deployment and monitoring.
• Collaborate with other data scientists, engineers, analysts, and diverse business teams
• Employ and encourage data science and software engineering best practices
• Communicate findings internally and externally

Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table:

• Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Computer Science or related STEM discipline plus relevant experience (2-5+ years for Ph.D. or 8-10+ for Masters)
• Real world delivery of data science projects in the fields such as natural language processing and people analytics
• Functional expertise in areas of corporate functions, such as Finance, HR, and Legal (ideally in a biotech setting) preferred
• Outstanding communication skills (verbal, written and remote)
• Demonstrated experience in collecting, cleaning, and analyzing large and/or unstructured datasets and effectively communicating insights
• Fluency in Python, especially the data scientific stack (Jupyter/Pandas/scikit-learn)
• Extensive experience in NLP (PyTorch/spaCy/NLTK/etc.) strongly preferred
• Track record of publishing scientific research and/or method development
• Familiarity with best practices in software development, including Amazon Web Services, Docker, version control (Git), and documentation
• Working knowledge of relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL)
• Ability to manage multiple projects and effectively collaborate in a dynamic, cross-functional environment

Moderna’s Enterprise Solutions Hub in Atlanta provides enterprise solutions similar to its counterpart in Warsaw, Poland, which was established in May 2021. Moderna's Hub in Atlanta will initially focus on delivering finance, human resources, procurement and digital solutions. Moderna is expecting to hire approximately 150-200 full time employees in the Atlanta Hub over the next two years.
