Moderna is seeking a Principal Data Engineer who has experience architecting and implementing technical solutions as part of a greater data analytics strategy. This role is responsible for hands on sourcing, manipulation and delivery of data from enterprise business systems to our data lake and data warehouse. This role will help drive Moderna’s next phase in the digital journey by modeling and transforming data to achieve actionable business outcomes. The Principal Data Engineer will create, troubleshoot and support ETL pipelines and the cloud infrastructure involved in the process and will also be able to design and maintain comprehensive visualizations using a BI tool. This role will help shape the first Moderna data Engineering team offshore with the best talent.

This position reports to the Associate Director, Data Engineering and will be based in Moderna’s Warsaw office.

Here’s What You’ll Do:

  • Partner with stakeholders and other technical team members to acquire and migrate initial data sources that are most relevant to business needs and goals.
  • Demonstrate deep technical and domain knowledge of relational and non-relational databases, Data Warehouses, Data lakes among other structured and unstructured storage options.
  • Determine which tools and architectures are best suited to develop a pipeline for a particular data source.
  • Develop data flow pipelines to extract, transform, and load data from various data sources in various forms, including custom ETL pipelines that enable model and product development.
  • Write custom scripts to extract data from unstructured/semi-structured sources.
  • Provide clear documentation for delivered solutions and processes, integrating documentation with the appropriate corporate stakeholders.
  • Identify and implement internal process improvements for data management (automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability).
  • Stay current with and adopt new tools and applications to ensure high quality and efficient solutions.
  • Design, implement and maintain complex data visualizations for teams across the company.

Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table:

  • Minimum 8 years of experience designing, developing, testing, and implementing ETL solutions using any enterprise ETL tools.
  • Proven experience working with Cloud Environments, AWS preferred.
  • Experience working in regulated environments with GXP experience in pharma/biotech strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of data warehouse design and data modeling principles, following the most updated and performant standards.
  • In-depth understanding of database management systems and scripting (SQL, NoSQL and distributed databases)
  • Experience designing comprehensive data visualizations to provide key metrics for teams across the company.
  • Experience with BI tools such as Tableau and Looker preferred.
  • Scripting experience, Python, Julia, or NodeJs preferred.
  • Experience with Data Prep/Automation tools such as Dataiku or Alteryx preferred.
  • Strong communication skills, a customer service attitude, and demonstrated problem solving ability.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Finance, Biotechnology or equivalent required.
