The Role:

  • Reporting to the Senior Director, R&D Strategy, the Director, Early Pipeline Epidemiology will drive epidemiology assessments and evidence generation for our preclinical and early clinical development portfolio. This position will model evolving disease states and the cost effectiveness and portfolio impact of our potential mRNA and genomic medicines across therapeutic areas (Infectious Diseases, Rare Diseases, Immuno-oncology, Autoimmune Diseases, and Cardiovascular Diseases). Working closely with program teams and leadership across Research and Development, this position will influence program direction, inform Development Candidate (DC) value, and contribute to therapeutic area (TA) strategy.

Here’s What You’ll Do:

  • Operate as Lead Epidemiologist accountable for execution of epidemiology activities for programs across TAs from discovery stage up to IND-Enabling Studies
  • Develop deep understanding of disease burden and epidemiology, unmet need, subject/patient segmentation, clinical course, and treatment patterns for indications addressed by our Development Candidates, informed by literature review, analysis of real world data, collaboration with internal subject matter experts and external Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs), and, where relevant, analysis of natural history studies
  • Develop epidemiological patient flow models to inform Development Candidate Target Product Profiles (TPPs), clinical trial and natural history study design and analysis, and revenue models to be generated by R&D Strategy colleagues
  • In collaboration with R&D Strategy colleagues, identify key evidence needed to support a compelling value proposition for Development Candidates and identify any gaps in epidemiologic or HEOR data
  • Develop health economics/cost-effectiveness models for early Development Candidates and extract implications to inform early clinical development and market access strategy, working closely with HEOR and Commercial colleagues
  • Design and execute epidemiology studies with leading experts in the field to refine our understanding of diseases and indications, including burden of disease studies, literature reviews and gap analyses, mathematical/epidemiologic modeling, and other innovative observational study designs to support advancement of Development Candidates
  • Perform study and vendor oversight, including contracting, development of protocols, data analysis plans, study reports and peer-reviewed publications
  • Contribute to epidemiology sections of regulatory filings (e.g. orphan drug applications) and investor presentations
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with other epidemiologists and health economists across the company (TA Epidemiology groups, HEOR, Safety, Data Science) to build observational research capabilities

Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table:

  • PhD in Epidemiology or related field, and 5 years of experience working for a pharmaceutical/biotech company in epidemiology or HEOR, MSc/MPH and 10 years of experience, or similar experience in a professional services (e.g., consulting, investment banking)
  • Deep knowledge of current and evolving epidemiological and HEOR methodologies and trends, and their application in the pharmaceutical space
  • Ability to independently design and conduct analyses in diverse therapeutic areas and to drive analyses to conclusion
  • Initiative to locate and leverage complementary expertise within the organization
  • Ability to successfully collaborate with team members at different levels and with varying roles across the company
  • Professional gravitas necessary to make impactful first impressions
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to communicate across levels and to various audiences
