The Role

Moderna is seeking a talented and motivated data scientist with a background in applying machine learning techniques to problems in engineering and manufacturing to join our Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DSAI) team. As part of our mission to “Build The Digital Biotech Company”, we see a key role for DSAI in scaling and accelerating the production of our mRNA therapeutics.

As a lead within the DSAI team, this role will collaborate with process and software engineers, model and analyze large amounts of real-time instrument data, and develop AI-driven methodology to streamline the processing of analytical assays and production methods of all sorts. We are looking for someone who is deeply curious, exhibits an excellent work ethic, and has a desire to bring novel mRNA therapeutics and vaccines to the market that will improve the lives of patients.

Here’s What You’ll Do

  • Support a wide variety of collaborations via data analysis and visualization, statistical modeling, optimization and experimental design
  • Engage stakeholders to align project goals iteratively at every step of a project’s life cycle including data procurement, modeling methodology, validation, deployment and monitoring.
  • Mentor and develop a growing team of data scientists and research associates to collaborate with the TechDev and Manufacturing teams
  • Identify impactful opportunities to apply recent advances in machine learning and optimization and keep up to date with the latest advances in the field
  • Collaborate with other data scientists, engineers, research scientists, statisticians, and manufacturing teams
  • Employ and encourage data science and software engineering best practices
  • Communicate findings internally and externally
  • Additional duties as may be assigned from time to time

Here’s What You’ll Need (Minimum Qualifications)

  • Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Natural Sciences, or related discipline
  • Minimum 8 years of experience delivering data science projects and guiding teams to analyze and model scientific data, preferably in an industry setting

Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Familiarity with techniques such as discrete optimization (schedule optimization, constraint programming, meta-heuristics etc.) a plus
  • Outstanding communication skills (verbal, written and remote)
  • Demonstrated experience in collecting, cleaning, and analyzing large and/or unstructured datasets and effectively communicating insights
  • Fluency in Python, especially the data scientific stack (Jupyter/Pandas/scikit-learn)
  • Track record of publishing scientific research and/or method development, preferably in the natural science, operations, or engineering research fields a plus
  • Familiarity with best practices in software development, including Amazon Web Services, Docker, version control (Git), and documentation
  • Working knowledge of relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL)
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and effectively collaborate in a dynamic, cross-functional environment
