Job Summary:

RTRC AI System Engineering Team is seeking a Principal Research Engineer for Intelligent Systems with passion for making safe and secure AI-enabled systems. The team is engaged in a wide variety of research topics from Model and Design of Systems, Advanced Reasoning, Verification and Certification, Decision Making & Robotics, and Cybersecurity. The focus of this position will be to identify challenges in the development of dependable AI-enabled systems and create system engineering solutions for them. We are looking for people who will thrive in a dynamic work environment and enjoy working on hard, cutting edge applied research problems for both our Business Units and government funded projects. This position is performed with minimal supervision and requires a candidate with highly effective communication skills, a strong bias for action, and the ability to prioritize and advance multiple objectives. 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Conduct applied research in the areas of design, planning, control, and management of intelligent and autonomous aerospace systems, as well as complex development, design and analysis tools. 
  • Demonstrate the potential to initiate, lead, and execute funding opportunities in both internal and external R&D.
  • Keep abreast of the latest developments in the field by continuous learning and enthusiastically champion new ideas and new problem definitions.
  • Require an ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment focused on innovation and be able to partner with leading, worldwide institutions (university, government agencies, national labs, and professional organizations) to meet organizational objectives.
  • Demonstrate exceptional communication skills and ability to provide timely, accurate and detailed reports, presentations, and technical papers for archival journals.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Experience with acquiring and managing research projects funded by relevant government agencies (e.g., DARPA, AFRL, NRL, ARL or any DoD Agency, ARPA-E or any DoE Agency, NASA).
  • Experience in the design or verification of intelligent systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong analytical, project management, problem-solving, interpersonal, leadership skills.
  • Self-starter with willingness to take initiative, support strategic priorities, take ownership of assigned projects/initiatives and contribute to results and ability to work with a minimum supervision.
  • Outstanding formal and informal presentation skills.
  • System and software engineering.
  • Model- Based Design tools and methodologies.
  • Formal Verification tools and methodologies.
  • Aerospace certification standards.
  • AI technologies (such as symbolic reasoning, not only Machine Learning and Neural Networks).

Work Authorization: 

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship now or in the future. RTX will not offer sponsorship for this position.

Location: 

  • Berkeley CA, (On Site/Hybrid work schedule)
  • Relocation to the Berkeley, CA area offered for this position. 

Education:

  • M.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or other STEM discipline and 6 years of relevant work experience OR
  • A Ph.D. degree with 3-5 years of work experience.

Engineering/Other Technical Positions:

Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 5 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations.

Requires advanced knowledge of work area typically obtained through advanced education combined with experience. May have practical knowledge of project

management. Practical to substantial knowledge of RTX projects, programs or systems with the ability to make enhancements and leverage in daily work.

Typically requires:

A University Degree or equivalent experience and minimum 8 years prior relevant experience, or An Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 6 years experience

Engineering/Other Technical Positions:

Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 5 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations.

The salary range for this role is 94,000 USD - 196,000 USD; however, Raytheon Technologies considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills. Hired applicants may be eligible for benefits, including but not limited to, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, 401(k) match, flexible spending accounts, flexible work schedules, employee assistance program, Employee Scholar Program, parental leave, paid time off, and holidays. Specific benefits are dependent upon the specific business unit as well as whether or not the position is covered by a collective-bargaining agreement. Hired applicants may be eligible for annual short-term and/or long-term incentive compensation programs depending on the level of the position and whether or not it is covered by a collective-bargaining agreement. Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and are dependent upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual performance, business unit performance, and/or the company’s performance.
