This exciting opportunity is in the Battery & Electrochemical Systems Technology group in the Research & Technology organization of Medtronic Energy & Component Center (MECC). The Battery Design Environment Engineer will develop and maintain the battery design environment that will house battery design, performance, and manufacturing process models, provide key support to new battery development activities at Medtronic. The Battery & Electrochemical Systems Technology group at Medtronic has a long, storied history of making significant contributions to the world of lithium metal and lithium-ion batteries, especially pertaining to medical devices. The Design Environment Engineer will find many opportunities to contribute to the development of next generation of medical devices by creating novel energy solutions that can transform lives. 

A Day in the Life

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Designs, develops, analyzes, troubleshoots and provides technical skills during research and/or product development.
  • Designs studies to investigate specific life science questions within field of expertise.
  • May be involved in product research and development and/or clinical trials.
  • Translates research discoveries into usable and marketable products.
  • Apply model-based design and model-based systems engineering approaches to mature battery and electrochemical system models into medical device system models into medical device system level models, assess tradeoffs and alternatives. 
  • Own and maintain design environment software license(s) for the organization, collaborate with scientists and engineers to integrate models into the design environment.
  • Stay current with state of the art in battery technology, model-based design, and systems engineering practices and AI/Data science methodologies/algorithms.
  • Author reports and white papers as necessary to document models, trade off studies.
  • Present technical content and project updates in design and project reviews.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors degree required
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience

Nice to Have

  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or Industrial Engineering
  • Expertise in electrochemistry, lithium metal and lithium-ion batteries, battery management systems, systems integration of batteries and electrochemical systems
  • Expertise in battery & electrochemical modeling methods, interfacing with battery manufacturing processes
  • Demonstrated experience with implementing model-based design and optimization approaches in integrating batteries & electrochemical systems in complex systems and
  • devices – e.g., MATLAB, Simulink, Process integration and design optimization tools such as ANSYS Optislang, ESTECO modeFRONTIER
  • Experience with Engineering model verification & validation, ASME V&V 40, software validation
  • Statistical analysis using JMP or Minitab, knowledge of optimization methods, Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) Green Belt certification.
  • Coding experience in at least one of the following languages: MATLAB, Python, R, C#
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Project management experience or similar leadership experience

The provided base salary range is used nationally (except in certain CA locations). The rate offered is compliant with federal/local regulations and may vary by experience, certification/education, market conditions, location, etc.
