As a Machine Vision Engineer in the global Operations Innovation team at Medtronic, your role is crucial in developing machine vision technology and applications for automated inspection of high-quality components used in medical devices. Your work will contribute to improving the efficiency, accuracy, and reliability of manufacturing processes across Medtronic's 70 global manufacturing facilities. A Day in the Life

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Design and optimize image acquisition systems, including camera selection, optics selection, lighting, and calibration techniques.
  • Leverages commercial computer vision technologies such as Cognex Keyence, Halcon and/or GigE components, where appropriate.
  • Collaborate with internal and external resources to integrate machine vision systems into manufacturing processes, ensuring seamless operation and compatibility.
  • Develop and implement machine vision algorithms and systems for product quality, including image processing, object detection, recognition, and tracking.
  • Conduct feasibility studies, performance evaluations, validation, and verification (FAT) activities of machine vision systems.
  • Optimize and fine-tune machine vision algorithms and parameters to improve accuracy, yield, and reliability.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in machine vision technology and imaging techniques, and apply them to enhance our product quality.
  • Collaborate with regulatory and quality teams to ensure compliance with relevant standards and regulations governing medical devices.
  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting expertise for machine vision-related issues during the product development lifecycle.
  • Document and maintain comprehensive design specifications, test protocols, and reports.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of processes and methodologies related to machine vision system development.
  • Lead your own projects, collect and synthesize requirements, and provide optimal technology solutions with an effective roadmap for the development of vision hardware and analytics applications.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors degree required
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience

Nice to Have

  • Expertise with hardware components commonly used in machine vision systems, including cameras, lenses, lighting, and frame grabbers.
  • Deep understanding of computer vision principles, best practices, image processing techniques, and machine learning algorithms.
  • Experience in developing and implementing machine vision systems, preferably in the medical device industry.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, C++, or MATLAB, as well as experience with relevant libraries and frameworks (e.g., OpenCV, TensorFlow, PyTorch).
  • Knowledge of medical imaging modalities and standards (e.g., X-ray, ultrasound, DICOM) is highly desirable.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate complex requirements into practical solutions.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities, with the capacity to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience deploying AI and deep learning algorithms to production is a plus.
  • Experience with regulatory requirements and standards for medical devices is a plus.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment and find creative solutions for technology development roadblocks.
  • Ability to work both individually and collaboratively in teams to achieve project goals.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical issues to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% depending on project phases.

The provided base salary range is used nationally (except in certain CA locations). The rate offered is compliant with federal/local regulations and may vary by experience, certification/education, market conditions, location, etc.
