Within MSHP, the Analytics team is a thoughtful and diverse group of data science analysts that have important functional roles throughout our business. Using analytical insights, we deploy our clinical programs to improve the health of attributed populations and maximize customer value. We work hand and hand with the larger clinical and operational team stakeholders and support their efforts. The team blends past experiences from health plans, health systems and public health roles with cutting edge data analytics and machine learning capabilities to deliver exceptional and unique value to our broader business. Role Summary

MSHP seeks a Data Science Analyst III to collaborate with stakeholders from across the organization to develop sophisticated analytics to provide information, insights and BI (Business Intelligence) solutions that contribute to sound strategic planning, decision-making, goal setting, and effective performance measurement. The Data Science Analyst III is a senior role that demonstrates sound and a more advanced understanding of the healthcare domain, technical data manipulation and analytic development skills and impact the patient community of the Mount Sinai Health System. The role serves as mentor to others in the Data Science team and takes the lead role in project initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • You will design and implement data-driven insights to enable value-based contracts and commercial offerings. You will support the contract lifecycle from initial development and planning, through pre-sale and implementation, to reconciliation.
  • During planning phase: analyze variance to identify opportunities and risks; develop pro-forma scenario models of contracts and terms; create reports to guide negotiations with prospects
  • During implementation: forecast performance results and support client-specific areas of interest
  • During reconciliation: measure performance of our products across financial, patient satisfaction, and quality outcomes. Apply performance evaluation that fulfills contract terms and, when appropriate, the demands of rigorous outcomes research methodology.
  • Work with departmental staff to identify requirements for reporting and / or business intelligence tools.
  • Identify necessary data and methodologies; collect, integrate, analyze and interpret data.
  • Leverage advanced statistical analysis methods to create insightful recommendations and conclusions that you effectively communicate to your stakeholders.
  • Identify and address expected and unforeseen data complexities to mitigate their impact on the analytic outcome and associated business decisions. Clearly communicate data issues to the recipients and work to improve data quality where possible within the analytical models you create. Feed data quality issues back to IT to assist in our quest for high quality data.
  • Develop and present reports, analyses and findings to senior management and others as scheduled or requested.
  • You will engage with the MSHP Managed Care Contracting and Commercialization teams and interface with key leaders in our care management and clinical service lines.
  • Act as liaison/analyst for internal stakeholders, understand their needs and translate them into reporting and analytic solutions.
  • Adheres to corporate standards for performance metrics, data collection, data integrity, query design, and reporting format to ensure high quality, meaningful analytic output.
  • Works closely with IT on the ongoing improvement of Mount Sinai’s integrated data warehouse, driven by strategic and business needs, and designed to ensure data and reporting consistency throughout the organization.
  • Develops and maintains project work plans, including critical tasks, milestones, timelines, interdependencies and contingencies. Tracks and reports progress. Keeps stakeholders apprised of project status and implications for completion.
  • Prepares clear, well-organized project-specific documentation, including, at a minimum, analytic methods used, key decision points and caveats, with sufficient detail to support comprehension and replication.
  • Ensures customers are adequately trained to use self-service BI tools and dashboards.
  • Mentors level I and II Analysts, and teaches others within the organization on how to a) define meaningful process and performance measures, b) develop BI queries, and c) generate and use management reports effectively.
  • Shares development and process knowledge with other analysts in order to assure redundancy and continuously builds a core of analytical strength within the organization.
  • Demonstrates advanced level proficiency with the principles and methodologies of process improvement. Applies these in the execution of responsibilities in support of a process focused approach.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • BA or BS degree minimum, in a relevant field of study; Master’s degree preferred
  • 7 years minimum, higher preferred, in analytics development expertise, preferably in health care, or for a health provider, health plan or accountable care organization, including either:
    • Knowledge of the CMS Medicare regulations and related reporting requirements, such as STARS, Risk Adjustment and HEDIS is a strong plus.
    • Experience working in a health plan analytics, actuarial, financial reporting or medical economics department is a strong plus.
    • Data and database modeling experience is a strong plus.
    • Working knowledge of a health care EMR such as Epic/Clarity, is a plus
    • PhD, MD or DO program may be substituted for three years of experience.

Additional Skills and Qualities

  • Demonstrates the ability to assure compliance with regulatory, insurance and ethical standards regarding safety of patients, employees and property. Identifies contingency plans for potential risks.
  • Strong data mining skills using tools like SQL, R, Python
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to perform complex analysis and make recommendations based on statistical inferences. Experience with and an understanding of a wide variety of analytical or statistical methods.
  • Strong working knowledge of Business Intelligence products such as Tableau
  • General understanding of ETL tools
  • Advanced analytical, financial and technical skills needed to perform complex analysis and data modeling using sophisticated report writing and data management tools.
  • Ability to exercise critical thinking and logical reasoning, and understand the conceptual framework and database relationships underlying health care data.
  • Ability to think creatively; demonstrated excellent problem solving skills.
  • Excellent oral and writing skills characterized by the ability to communicate effectively with varying audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to articulate goals, plan and implement processes to achieve those goals, recognize and assess the implications of confounding variables, anticipate consequences, and meet deadlines.
  • Advanced interpersonal (e.g., mediating, mentoring, teaching) skills required to service internal and external clients effectively, and manage relationships and activities that are diverse and complex.
  • Self-motivated and resourceful, with a demonstrated ability to think and work independently, and to exercise independent judgment in originating or developing complex techniques or programs in a complex and dynamic environment.
  • High level of integrity as demonstrated by 1) appropriate treatment of confidential or protected health information, 2) adherence to policies, procedures, rules, and regulations, 3) professional conduct in dealing with persons internal and external to the organization, and 4) sensitivity to populations served by the organization.
