Job Description

The Computational Scientist will conduct bioinformatics research to support the development and application of novel tools for the analysis of multi-omics data, including from bulk and single-cell sequencing, spectral flow cytometry, and spatial transcriptomics. The Computational Scientist’s responsibilities will also include reviewing and presenting data for publication and/or presentation. The Computational Scientist will report directly to the Principal Investigator (PI). 

The Tisch Cancer Institute is a vital component of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital and plays a key role in the Mount Sinai Health System, which is one of the largest health care systems in the nation. We are a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated center and provide a multidisciplinary approach to cancer treatments and clinical breakthroughs that may one day put an end to cancer. 

Responsibilities

  • Conducts a variety of research tasks under the direction of the PI using advanced computational biology, machine learning and statistical techniques, including gene expression analysis, analysis of bulk and single-cell next-generation sequencing, and flow cytometry data. Must be able to read and understand scientific data being applied to conduct the research.
  • Collaborates with the PI in the development of new projects and research methodologies. Incumbents are expected to stay apprised of the literature as well as practical skill sets relevant to the field. 
  • Nurtures collaborative relationships with fellow scientists within the institution, locally, nationally and internationally. 
  • Assists the PI with publications by extracting and compiling moderate to complex research data (i.e. related to genomics, oncology, immunology, etc.); assisting in interpreting the data; reviewing and editing articles used in scientific publication. Must have strong science background. 
  • Mentors and trains less experienced research staff and students in research techniques and use of research tools.
  • Ensures compliance with safety and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

  • Masters degree or equivalent in a domain science; Ph.D. in a scientific domain preferred.
  • Experience in a research environment.
  • Previous experience in bioinformatics and computational biology, including analysis of next-generation sequencing data, biomarkers discovery, and machine learning techniques.
  • Previous experience in cancer genomics is highly desirable.
  • Excellent communication skills in written and oral English are essential.
  • The candidate is also expected to be self-motivated, creative, and capable of contributing productively in a team environment.
  • Strong analytical skills.
