Tesla's mission is to accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy. Tesla Insurance Services supports this mission by reducing the cost of ownership of Tesla vehicles through reduced insurance costs. The Business Analytics data science team contributes to these goals by developing and improving the Safety Score model. The Safety Score enables Tesla to provide cost effective insurance by identifying risky drivers using telematics data from their vehicles and to promote safer driving by providing real time feedback to drivers.
What You’ll Do
- Contribute to all stages of the Safety Score driving risk model including but not limited to problem formulation, data pre-processing, feature engineering, sample design, algorithm selection and evaluation, hyper-parameter tuning, deployment, implementation, and monitoring
- Research vehicle sensor data to extract predictive and interpretable features for collision risk
- Develop and maintain feedback loop to evaluate and refine our pricing models based on claims and crash data
- Partner with engineers on vehicle software, autopilot, and data engineering teams to identify, prototype, and test new features to identify safe or risky driving feature analysis across a broad range of fleet data and contribute to shared machine learning platform and infrastructure
- Partner with actuaries on incorporating telematics model into our pricing models and provide documentation and data science support for regulatory approval
What You’ll Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in quantitative field (statistics, math, physics, etc.)
- 5+ years of experience in roles related to data science, statistics, or machine learning, preferably with a portion in insurance, financial services, transportation, fleet management, or vehicle telematics
- Experience with applying statistics and machine learning methods to solve business problems
- Experience with business research: extracting actionable research questions from ambiguous business problems, identifying tools and data necessary to find answers, finding answers, and communicating results to stakeholders
- Ability to self-start and self-direct work in an unstructured environment, comfortable dealing with ambiguity
- Excellent problem-framing, problem solving and project management skills and ability to change direction quickly
- Excellent written and verbal communication to effectively understand business problems and communicate analysis results
- Proficiency in Python and experience with open-source ML libraries
- Proficiency manipulating big data with Apache Spark (Python or Scala APIs)
- Proficiency in SQL and experience with commercial and emerging databases, technologies, and languages
