Job Description

The Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate (EBSD) leads novel and necessary research in three core areas: Atmospheric and Climate sciences, Biological Sciences, and Environmental Molecular Sciences. The contributions of EBSD staff are many as we continue to elevate the impact of PNNL's science mission: to understand, predict, and control the complex adaptive systems underlying the science behind Earth, energy, and security.

The Biological Sciences Division (BSD) within EBSD is soliciting applications for a post-masters research associate for a position in the Computational Biology Group to aid in the design and development of statistical algorithms for mass spectrometry data analysis processes into robust open-source software. The candidate will be responsible for working with senior staff to conduct software development, execute statistical studies and analyses, write peer-reviewed publications, and develop novel algorithms. The candidate will be expected to work with other data scientists as well as with analytical chemists and experimental biologists in interdisciplinary teams on research into the molecular processes controlling the function of biological and ecological systems across spatial and temporal scales. The ideal candidate will have significant coursework and training in applied statistics, bioinformatics, and statistical learning techniques. Proficiency in scripting languages (Python, R) and knowledge of software engineering best practices is expected. The candidate should have excellent communication skills with a demonstrated interest in multi-disciplinary, collaborative research.

Responsibilities

Successful candidates will work in interdisciplinary teams to design, develop, and implement methods, processes, and systems to manage and analyze complex, high-dimensional, and high-volume mass spectrometry data. Successful candidates will also apply knowledge of bioinformatics, statistical modeling, and software development for biological and chemistry applications, as well as contributing to open-source scientific software to support data analysis from complex and high-dimensional mass spectrometry data.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have received a Master’s degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university. Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree(s) in statistics, bioinformatics, or related field.
  • High level proficiency in scripting languages (Python, R)
  • Proficient working in software development platforms (GitLab, GitHub)
  • Knowledge of analytical chemistry, specifically mass spectrometry
  • Experience with analyzing omics data including metabolomics and/or proteomics
