Job Description

Responsibilities

As a postdoctoral researcher in the Geochemistry group, you will join a talented, multi-investigator team to investigate anthropogenic carbon storage in basalt formations.

The Ideal Candidate:

If you are ready to advance your talents and training in earth science as a postdoctoral researcher at a national laboratory widely recognized for its work in the physical sciences, we want to connect with you. The ideal applicant has an interest in advancing quantitative geologic approaches and applying them to complex problems. Details are below; you do not need to meet all the preferred qualifications to be considered.

What you will do:

  • Investigate carbon storage in basalt, including development of regional geologic models using existing geologic and hydrogeochemical data, to better constrain storage capacity.
  • Identify priority areas and options for acquisition of new datasets to resolve key uncertainties.
  • Lead manuscript development and maintain a strong overall publication record in the peer-reviewed scientific literature.
  • Interact, communicate, and problem solve with a diverse team of research staff across PNNL.
  • Contribute as a team member to support publications and reports led by other scientists.
  • Present research at technical conferences and project/program review meetings
  • Participate in the development of research proposals.
  • Work in collaboration with a diverse group of scientists and technical staff across the Lab and must be able to work closely with others and communicate effectively.
  • Have opportunities to work on multiple projects related to materials science, crystallization, energy storage, and environmental management.

PNNL is committed to diversity and inclusion; applications from women, minorities, individuals with disabilities, and veterans are strongly encouraged.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong verbal and written communications skills, including conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Experience using GIS, evaluating well-logs, seismic interpretation, and analyzing hydrologic/geochemical databases.
  • Risk evaluation management, including uncertainty quantification and sensitivity analysis on key parameters.
  • Experience analyzing basalts with petrographic microscopy, spectroscopy, and X-ray analysis.
  • Experience processing and analyzing 3D X-ray computed tomography of rock cores.
  • Experience with programming and machine learning for automated analysis of large mineralogic and geologic datasets.
  • The ability to adapt, refine, or innovate experimental and numerical modelling tools as needed.
