Our expert staff provide multi-disciplinary solutions to complex energy and environmental issues. Key capabilities include science (chemical and mechanical). We employ a systems perspective that includes, discovery technology development and scale-up as well as economic, regulatory, and market acceptance issues necessary for successful technology commercialization. EP&MD focuses on three mission contributions: Clean Fossil Energy, Electricity Infrastructure, & Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.

Responsibilities

Are you interested in making the world a better place while gaining valuable research experience to launch your career? PNNL is seeking undergraduate students with a passion about creating a sustainable energy future through science and engineering to join us for summer internship. The Energy and Environment Diversity Internship Program (EEDIP) provides a 10–12-week paid, research-based experience for students who are traditionally underrepresented in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math fields.

This Energy and Processes Materials Division is seeking interns to support its work in:

• Advanced Energy Systems
• Applied Materials and Manufacturing
• Battery Materials and Systems
• Chemical and Biological Processing

We are looking for chemists, materials scientists, mechanical engineers, computational scientists, chemical engineers, and data scientists.

EEDIP interns also take part in the Gold Experience, which includes networking with fellow interns and PNNL staff, and professional growth opportunities throughout the summer. This experience helps interns become educated on the breadth of research undertaken at PNNL. Many students return for multiple internships and successfully apply for full-time positions following graduation.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must be currently enrolled/matriculated in a PhD program at an accredited college.

Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Working toward a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) degree
• Preferred education in Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Chemistry, Computational Science or Data Science
• Preference will be given to candidates from programs with an emphasis on energy storage, catalysis, sustainable biofuel, carbon dioxide capture and conversion, or advanced manufacturing
