Responsibilities

Plans, develops, designs, and manages holistic systems solutions throughout the project lifecycle. Provides expertise in how to tailor systems engineering techniques and processes to meet project objectives within constraints. Balances systems thinking and systems engineering best practices, as needed, over the full range of technology maturity levels. Applies systems engineering expertise to define cost/benefit and risk/opportunity, develop and analyze alternatives, support decisions, and mitigate risks.

PNNL is seeking candidates to contribute to the following mission and operational research areas:

  • Disadvantaged and resilient communications
  • Unintended emissions exploitation
  • Intentional emissions exploitation
  • Mobile, edge, or IoT systems research
  • Multi-INT integration
  • Unattended remove sensor systems

Required Skills:

  • Experience developing firmware (VHDL/Verilog) for integrated sensor platforms
  • Experience developing FPGA embedded systems for critical timing applications
  • Familarity with FPGA High Level Sysnthesis workflows
  • Familarity with real-time FPGA troubleshooting tools: Integrated Logic Analyzers, hardware co-simulation
  • Integration of embedded systems with sensor platform hardware in resource constrained / low SWaP applications

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA and 7+ years of relevant work experience -OR-
  • MS/MA and 5+ years of relevant work experience -OR-
  • PhD with 3+ year of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, or related technical disciplines
  • An active clearance along with previous experience developing and/or deploying systems to support national security missions (DoD or IC) is highly desired
  • Data sciences/Machine Learning/Deep Learning/Artificial Intelligence
  • RF or ML optimized FPGA experience: e.g. RFSOC, Versal ACAP
  • Modifying Board Support Packages deployed with Software defined radio
  • GPU accelerated computing
  • Wireless communications theory (modulation schemes, propagation, etc.)
  • Signal processing and analysis 9spectral, joint time-frequency, etc.)
  • Conversant in communication protocols, medium access control structures, and common low speed data interfaces
  • Programming Languages: Python, MATLAB/Simulink, C/C++, Ve4rilog/VHDL/Model Composer, shell scripts TensorFlow, Keras, PyTorch
  • Comfortable with Windows, Linux OS, Android, RTOSs
  • Standards/Protocols of interest: Wi-Fi, 3/4/5/G, Bluetooth, Zigbee, RS232, I2C, SPI, UART
  • Conduct R&D to support national security projects and programs as an individual and as part of a team.
  • Document and brief research results and outcomes to technical audiences, PNNL leadership, and/or sponsors
  • Help develop research proposals.

Additional Information

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.

Requirements: 

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance with 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.
  • Drug Testing: All Security Clearance positions are Testing Designated Positions, which means that the candidate selected is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP). 

Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy until non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for 12 months can be demonstrated.

Testing Designated Position

This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). The candidate selected for this position will be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing for illegal drugs, including marijuana, consistent with the Controlled Substances Act and the PNNL Workplace Substance Abuse Program.
