Responsibilities

PNNL is seeking a technical expert with strong credentials in computer science and cyber security. Working as part of a world-class leadership team to define and execute an industry leading R&D effort, you will engage senior leaders across PNNL, government, industry, and academia to develop research thrusts that explore new ground in cyber security. You will demonstrate creative, imaginative leadership in crafting PNNL cyber security research programs. In this position, you will demonstrate thought leadership for research and engineering teams that are focused on advancing cyber security tools and techniques. At your fingertips will be cutting-edge test beds, data, and access to real-world problems, programs and

multidisciplinary staff that can facilitate cross-directorate collaboration in areas such as high-performance computing, large-scale data analytics, machine learning, advanced wireless communications, and applied mathematics.

You will initiate and lead internally and sponsor funded cyber security research projects, developing solutions for a variety of cyber security applications in fields such as resilience, prediction, and measurements. You will investigate and propose unique solutions in advancing the cyber security of critical infrastructures, AI deployed solutions, and specialized software systems. These are complex problems that must be solved through creativity, effective design, decomposition, and implementation.

Responsibilities include:

  • Conceiving of and leading strategic investments in computing and cyber security at the Directorate and Laboratory level, integrating technical disciplines across PNNL.
  • Developing and leading a multi project R&D portfolio including leading a personal research program as well as mentoring other researchers and scientists.
  • Coordinating the scientific and programmatic aspects of multiple projects and teams: defining and managing progress towards initiative-wide metrics and goals; representing your portfolio to Laboratory leadership, sponsors, and the external community.

Also interested in staff with interest in performing one or more of the following:

  • Designs and develops new systems, applications, and solutions for external customer's emerging technology and architecture including 5G mobile technology, cyber systems, and networks.
  • Investigates and proposes solutions to advancing tools and techniques for mitigating the effects of the unknown consequences of AI deployed systems.
  • Developing and leading strategic and/or tactical relationships with academic and commercial partners and increasing Laboratory visibility in the cyber security domain.
  • Has wide-ranging experience in the cyber security field and uses that knowledge and experience to meet mission objectives, innovate and solve complex challenges in creative and effective ways.

Your expertise, leadership and creativity will enhance an innovation culture and find solutions to hard problems in cyber security.

Other responsibilities include: Designs, deploys, and operates systems, networks, applications, and tools that underpin cyber security and cyber defense. Provides integration of hardware, software, and other components to solve operational challenges for cyber defenders. Performs data and systems engineering functions to support cyber operations activities and systems. Engineers and deploys security and defensive countermeasures and controls. Ensures system security needed in operations are assessed, established, and included in design and development; executes security requirements definition, systems analysis, systems design, security hardening, security test and evaluation, and certification and accreditation. Supports operational systems and performs activities such as vulnerability scanning, network, and system security configuration, etc. Design and architecture of new approaches, methods and techniques for cyber defense and resiliency for information technology and operational technology systems and networks. May interface with external entities including law enforcement, intelligence and other government organizations and agencies.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA and 7+ years of relevant work experience -OR-
  • MS/MA and 5+ years of relevant work experience -OR-
  • PhD with 3+ year of relevant experience

To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation.
