Responsibilities

Within the Emerging Threats and Technologies Division, experts in the Cyber Analytics and Analysis group creates reliable, repeatable, and robust methods for obtaining and maintaining cyber situational awareness. We are looking for an Cyber Security Engineer to join Analytic Architectures team.

This engineer will use their fundamental knowledge of software engineering to create, deploy, and evaluate new analytic architectures that will support cyber security vulnerability and threat analysis. Typical project tasks can include:

  • Constructing secure cloud information management systems, utilizing Infrastructure as Code design principles
  • Evaluate cloud telemetry data to monitor for security concerns and build heuristics for providing situational awareness on mixed on-prem/cloud systems
  • Moving and managing Terabytes of data daily within Extract-Transform-Load (ETL) pipelines to both human-driven analysis within GUI tools like Splunk or Athena as well as to facilitate advanced analytics and machine learning enrichments
  • Balancing computing/analytics tasks in a data ETL pipelines between remote sensors and centralized cloud environments while minimizing security vulnerabilities

As the engineer advances in their career and role, they are expected to communicate across NSD’s cyber and analytics

communities to create and maintain operational environments for cyber analysis. They will collaborate with external sponsor organizations and industry to identify opportunities to propose new work and facilitate the adoption of analytics by user communities. The ideal candidate will be able to guide and shape analytic development while balancing mission-specific constraints.

Technologies and Skills Routinely Used:

  • Cyber Security: Knowledge of cyber security best practices including the implementation of the CIA Triad in software design; Basic knowledge of fundamental workings and security of telecommunication network design, operating systems, software, and/or hardware (IT/OT)
  • Development Environment: Combination of cloud (dominantly AWS) & on-prem/local
  • Development Tools: Atlassian Suite, Gitlab, Preferred IDE
  • Programming Languages: Python, Spark, GraphQL/Scala, JavaScript, Puppet
  • Compute Environments: Linux (EC2), Docker, Kubernetes
  • Data Pipeline Technology: S3, Athena, Elasticsearch, Lambda, Spark, Splunk

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA and 5+ years of relevant work experience -OR-
  • MS/MA and 3+ years of relevant work experience -OR-
  • PhD with 1+ year of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a demonstrated ability for writing in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Proficient in Linux system administration.
  • Experience designing infrastructure design projects for the IC or other secure computing organization.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills with ability to prioritize work assignments and adjust schedules based on changing requirements.

Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment

Some assisting with laboratory operations for the deployment of equipment may be required.

Additional Information

Special Conditions: On occasion, domestic and international travel may be required. Hazards associated with international travel safety and security will apply. The incumbent will be expected to work flexible hours to accommodate time zone differences associated with the location of virtual event participants.

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.

  • Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance with 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.
  • Drug Testing: All Security Clearance positions are Testing Designated Positions, which means that the candidate selected is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).

Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy until non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for 12 months can be demonstrated.

This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). The candidate selected for this position will be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing for illegal drugs, including marijuana, consistent with the Controlled Substances Act and the PNNL Workplace Substance Abuse Program.
