Responsibilities

This position will be hosted out of the Human-Centered Computing group. The national interest landscape is constantly evolving, providing constant software engineering challenges which in turn provides for an extremely exciting and rewarding work environment. We are looking for candidates that want to contribute to an ever-growing need to support large-scale and complex analytics challenges, spanning several national security domains and missions.  The primary role will be developing novel user-facing applications, but there are opportunities to develop skills that go well beyond front-end development: product design, machine learning, human-computer interaction, augmented intelligence, DevSecOps, and many others. Every mission challenge is different, which keeps the work very exciting and rewarding.

Technologies Routinely Used (Depends on Project and Capability Need):

  • Development Environment: Combination of cloud & on-prem/local
  • Development Tools– Atlassian Suite, Gitlab, Preferred IDE
  • Programming Languages – JavaScript, TypeScript, Python
  • Web Frameworks – ReactJS, Vue, Svelte
  • Service Layer – AppSync/GraphQL, API Gateway
  • Data Repositories – RDBMS (PostGres), Document Stores (Elastic / Mongo), Key Value (Redis / DynamoDB)

National Interest Project Examples:

  • Identify the illicit smuggling of nuclear materials into the country [Link]
  • Develop large data pipelines  to thwart funding for terrorists, nuclear proliferators, drug cartels, and rogue leaders [Link]
  • Use remotely sensed imagery to identify and monitor the progression of wildfires [Link]
  • Analyze the resiliency of the electric power grid to prevent large-scale outages [Link]
  • Model climate change and impacts to civilization [Link]
  • Hunt for the existence of dark matter to understand the nature of the universe [Link]

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA and 7+ years of relevant work experience -OR-
  • MS/MA and 5+ years of relevant work experience -OR-
  • PhD with 3+ year of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of experience as a professional software developer (JavaScript, Typescript, etc.)
  • Experience leading engineering teams, mentoring and/or managing production-grade application development
  • Expertise in React/Redux
  • Knowledge of software engineering best practices and software project lifecycles
  • Experience writing unit and integration tests
  • Proficiency designing Restful APIs a plus
  • Strong communication skills
  • Eagerness to work on challenging problems in an ever-changing project landscape
  • Willingness to help grow diverse and inclusive software engineering teams
  • Active Federal Q Clearance and ability to maintain such clearance

Additional Information

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.

Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance with 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.
  • Drug Testing: All Security Clearance positions are Testing Designated Positions, which means that the candidate selected is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).

Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy until non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for 12 months can be demonstrated.

Testing Designated Position

This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). The candidate selected for this position will be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing for illegal drugs, including marijuana, consistent with the Controlled Substances Act and the PNNL Workplace Substance Abuse Program.

In accordance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, new employees are required to obtain and maintain a HSPD-12 Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credential. To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.

Mandatory Requirements

Please be aware that the Department of Energy (DOE) prohibits DOE employees and contractors from having any affiliation with the foreign government of a country DOE has identified as a “country of risk” without explicit approval by DOE and Battelle. If you are offered a position at PNNL and currently have any affiliation with the government of one of these countries, you will be required to disclose this information and recuse yourself of that affiliation or receive approval from DOE and Battelle prior to your first day of employment.
