Job Description

The Chief Engineer requires a Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering, Computer Science or related technical field and at least 15 years of related leadership experience in development and delivery of Naval Systems. Applicants with a Master's degree and a minimum of 13 years of related leadership experience are also eligible.

Department of Defense Secret security clearance is required at time of hire active and transferable. Require ability to obtain a TS clearance is required, and a TS/SCI clearance would be a benefit. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed in our facility, U.S. citizenship is required.

Responsibilities for this Position

General Dynamics Mission Systems (GDMS), a market leader and technology innovator, is seeking talented professionals to deliver cutting edge solutions to our Navy customers.

GDMS has an immediate opening for the Surface Systems Business Area Chief Engineer. Our team works closely with the Navy and shipyard customers to develop the solutions that allow them to carry out high consequence missions though design, build, deployment and sustainment of our surveillance, RADAR, EW, command and control, and autonomous solutions.

The selected candidate will lead definition of technical strategies, solutions, and plans. The mission demands we deliver leading edge capability for our users with high reliability, high assurance, cyber-resilient systems. As the Chief Engineer, you will lead the business technical strategies and roadmaps, and hold final technical authority over the design, production, installation, and activation needed to satisfy the affordability, functional, behavioral, interface, and operational requirements of the systems we deliver.

The position can be successfully fulfilled from either Pittsfield MA, Dedham MA, or Fairfax VA. Relocation is available.

The role requires demonstrated success with the following:

  • Development of effective and affordable operational concepts, architecture, solutions, products, and approaches in the following areas and leveraging:
    • Mission warfare systems;
    • Mission analysis, modelling, test, and operation;
    • Naval platform design, deployment, and operations;
    • Command control and communication systems.
    • Unmanned, platform, and shore assets; and
    • Sensing and surveillance systems;
  • Demonstrated history of leading large, distributed, and multi-disciplinary engineering teams;
  • Demonstrated passion for innovation, a sophisticated understanding and system level experience with engineering systems and the ability to further advance technology
  • Demonstrated ability to apply advanced principles of engineering and management to solve problems involving the development of complex technology
  • Lead resolution of technical issues & risks on critical and high profile activities
  • Demonstrated ability to research and apply important shifts in technological landscape & implications to the company, for example the following technologies central to our work: naval platform and system design and integration, networking and processing intensive architectures, Naval platform design and deployment, communications, application of machine learning to autonomous and operator intensive systems, cloud based SW solutions at platform and system level, and conduct of engineering in model based environments;
  • Development of technical and teaming strategies across areas of business;
  • Development and implementation of technology roadmaps in support of long-range strategic plans, and IRAD investments and their alignment with customer strategic objectives;
  • Experience as a technical lead on proposals containing significant engineering development and manufacturing content;
  • Experience in full engineering life-cycle to include: concept development, customer engagement and shaping, solution and proposal creation, design, integration, test, verification, validation, logistics, training, sustainment and obsolescence handling;
  • Experience designing, specifying requirements, inspecting, verifying, and testing Naval systems, and systems of systems; and
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and be comfortable briefing senior leaders both within the company and the customer's organization.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Candidates are required to have demonstrated team building and motivation skills
  • Candidates are required to have demonstrated success on significant programs as engineering lead /chief engineer, and/or as a program manager with excellent technical and people leadership strengths, with proven business experience in the design, integration and production of high reliability, high assurance systems
  • Candidates need to have the balanced technical and programmatic background to be a decision maker on program technical issues, understand the business aspects and have the ability to be a strategic / competitive thinker exhibiting an exceptional degree of ingenuity, creativity, and resourcefulness
  • The candidate should be capable of demonstrating entrepreneurial thinking in support of developing innovative solutions and applications that can translate theory to real world solutions that enable new missions for current and future customers.
