Join an agile self-motivated team of engineers responsible for the development and secure implementation of emerging autonomous technology for use in ground combat vehicles. The function of this position is to support the Autonomy (Robotics) and Cyber and Command, Control, Communication, Computers, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C5ISR) integrated product teams with secure autonomous system design, architecture development and technology integration, evaluation, testing and compliance across the US Operations platform portfolio. The member who fills this role will have a unique opportunity to grow the Autonomy group within the US Operations Engineering Directorate, and will have lasting impact on GDLS business operations!

The following are the key duties and skills required:

  • Apply computer science, engineering, security and mathematical analysis concepts and principles in the application of robotics principles.
  • Develop, evaluate and implement state-of-the-art perception, motion planning, control, and target tracking algorithms for various crewed and uncrewed platforms
  • Research and evaluate recent developments in SLAM, computer vision, state estimation, sensing technology, data fusion, machine learning, path planning and control
  • Work with various universities, research institutions, government labs and industrial partners to research, develop and implement cutting-edge vehicle autonomy technologies
  • Assist with concept development for next generation land combat vehicle design
  • Understanding of feature/systems requirements and the ability to translate the requirements into validation test procedures and use cases
  • Develop and carry out system test plans for field testing
  • Participate in internal and customer demonstrations
  • Work closely with cross functional members of the engineering organization to develop and evaluate interfaces between hardware and software, and operational performance requirements and design of the overall system
  • Develop data / message protocol transformation mechanisms / applications, enabling interoperability between multiple data-sharing domains
  • Experience with Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning and experience with systems and sub-systems such as: Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, Cameras, Radars, or Lidar
  • Experience with Autonomous Systems and/or Robotics including planning or localization and experience with simulation tools
  • Participate in peer reviews, identify, track and assess solutions to defects
  • Participate in design and integration troubleshooting/Root Cause Corrective Action (RCCA) and problem report/test incident resolution for production, development, test, or modification projects
  • Experience evaluating emerging technologies and success with integration of technologies onto platforms/products
  • Experience in supporting and conducting trade studies/structured decisions for autonomous systems
  • Develop and evaluate checkpoint and design milestone artifacts and Contract Data Requirements List (CDRLs) and review to ensure technical accuracy and compliance with contract requirements

Required Qualifications (may not require all but target candidate would meet most):

  • Bachelor or Masters degree in engineering, computer science, or a related field
  • Minimum of 10 years related engineering experience, 5 years Robotics experience preferred.
  • Practical knowledge of perception, state estimation, localization, mapping, SLAM, path-planning, control, and modeling
  • Hands-on experience with autonomous systems and sensing technologies, such as LiDAR, radar, camera, IMU, and GPS
  • Ability to perform general hands-on troubleshooting of electromechanical systems
  • Familiar with common open-source middleware and libraries like ROS, OpenCV, Gazebo, Rviz, PCL, etc
  • Familiar with implementing cutting-edge autonomy research algorithms into robotic platforms
  • Knowledge of computer vision and 3D LiDAR point cloud processing
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of machine learning techniques; experience in using CNN, DNN, FCN, and reinforcement learning to solve practical problems
  • Familiar with common neural network architectures, such as ResNET, VGG, and Inception
  • Strong software development skills - C, C++, Python
  • Proficiency with Linux (Ubuntu)
  • The flexibility to work non-duty hours or on weekends as needed by the project.
  • This position will require eligibility to obtain a US security clearance. (Non-US Citizens may not be eligible to obtain a security clearance)
  • This position requires the candidate to be able to climb on/off, work in, and work around military vehicles is desired. Must be able to pass ASR test (Anthropometric Size Requirement for confined space)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preferred is Doctoral degree in Robotics
  • Experience with field robotics is highly desired
  • Experience with typical vehicle mobility systems that enable acceleration, braking, and steering
  • Exposure to networking, communication, and interface technologies and protocols CAN, TCP, UDP, DDS, MAVLink, JAUS, IOP, etc.
  • Understanding of major automotive vehicle systems such as motion control, automotive Network, and powertrain
  • Experience with sensor fusion, tracking, object detection and classification
  • Familiar with multi-vehicle coordination
  • Experience with MATLAB, LabVIEW, and GPU programming
