The Shell.ai Residency Programme is a two-year, immersive programme, which allows data scientist and AI engineers to gain experience working on a variety of exciting AI projects across all of Shell’s businesses, and play a key role in the energy transition, unlocking more, cleaner energy for all. Depending on internal demand and their specific expertise, AI residents will work on digital projects in areas such as subsurface and wells, asset management and customer centricity. The programme expects residents to spend a substantial part of their time on their technical development and allows them to benefit from our collaborations with leading universities and technology companies. After the programme, and based on performance, the resident may be encouraged to apply on an internal and permanent position.

What’s the role?

You will be accountable for building a differentiated capability and shaping part of the portfolio of Chemometrics & Digital Chemistry for medium and long-term opportunities.

More specifically, your role will entail:

  • Delivery and impact: you will need to interface well within Shell for bringing in problems worth solving from diverse LoBs and stakeholders and land tangible, quantifiable impactful delivery as recorded in the Impact Management Framework and beyond.
  • External trends: You will need to keep an eye and leverage external trends to bring in cutting edge innovation in this space. Established connections and credibility in external professional bodies and academic community will be a plus. Leveraging open innovation and a commercial mindset with strong customer focus is a critical element of this role.
  • Differentiated capability: you will need to continue building on and expand on our differentiated expertise in chemometrics modelling, multivariate statistical/probabilistic learning, design of experiments and process modelling and optimization for areas like LNG, GTL, Chemicals, Bio-Refining, Fuels & Lubricants, but also contributing to the growth of the team in new areas such as CO2 abatement, Circularity & Bio products, XTL, H2, Wind, among others. You need to work closely with the relevant stakeholders from PTX, business and external customers. You would need to seek opportunities to apply machine learning and AI where appropriate.

What we need from you

When it comes to nurturing collaborative stakeholder relations it’s your excellent people skills that will make the difference. You will inspire people to make changes that will have a direct impact on our commercial success. Furthermore, you will have:

  • PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Theoretical Science, Statistics, or Operational Research with experience in large-scale parameterization., or MSc with 4+ year experience
  • For this role we prefer an AI specialist with experience in advanced fields such as reinforcement learning, GANs, meta learning, active learning, etc. applied to industrial process modelling and optimization, including (hyperspectral) image analysis
  • Proven track record in deterministic and stochastic optimization
  • Knowledge in the design of experiments, general linear modeling, multivariate analysis, statistical modeling, and/or time series modeling is a plus
  • A problem-solving mindset and an enthusiasm for learning new skills
  • Must have strong technical skills to develop advanced analytics algorithms/models
  • Hands-on code development (MATLAB, Python, Java, R)
  • Experience using Git to manage models, and source code
  • Significant experience and track record of strategic business delivery from R&D and consultancy projects
  • Demonstrated people management and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Regularly following the scientific journals and regularly publishing in scientific journals
