Where you fit in

The Senior Data Scientist will be working closely with data scientists across the data science community, scientists from the Technology organization and product owners and managers from Renewable and Energy Solutions (R&ES) business and Information & Digital Technology (IDT).

You will actively contribute to projects that include several Shell businesses and technology stakeholders, scope projects based on the business problems, and develop solutions that contribute to Shell’s ambition for Energy Transition.

Based on your stakeholder engagements, you will also contribute to the R&ES data science innovation roadmap, populating the innovation funnel of the technology theme you are supporting and leading the delivery of projects out of it.

What’s the role?

As a Senior Data Scientist, you will be contributing to high-potential, digital innovation projects in the R&ES space, using your in-depth knowledge about data science technology.

The role will be involved in projects throughout their development cycle means and you will be responsible for scoping and framing as well as for the end-to-end modelling approach and model lifecycle. All the work needs to be carried out in natural teams and in a complex stakeholder environment– in line with R&ES business, Digital IT strategy and Technology Innovation roadmaps.

You will thrive on providing a structural approach to the development of early-stage digital products, ensuring best use of available data, mathematical and statistical methods, optimization, and machine learning methods.

 More specifically, your role will include:

  • Scope and frame data science projects
  • Contribute hands-on to data science project development and -together with IT and digital teams in the business- support operationalization and further collaboration
  • Provide technical leadership to junior data scientists, reviewing code and assisting with methodology development
  • Manage a portfolio of digital projects (part of a technology program) in coordination with the R&ES business and the Technology organization
  • Engage with external stakeholders to scout and evaluate technology developments in the data science space

What we need from you

Your capability to translate a complex business problem into a science problem and your ability to define data science model requirements for novel and R&D technologies will be key for success in this role.

Furthermore, you should have:

  • Masters or PhD degree (preferred) in quantitative subjects like Physics, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Data science, Computer Science etc.
  • Proven experience in general linear modelling, multivariate analysis, statistical modelling
  • Knowledge of time series modelling, and optimization is preferred
  • Experience in the electricity sector (i.e. power system, power markets, grid and utilities operation) is preferred
  • Advanced skills in programming in Python and/or R
  • High standards of code quality, making use of version control tools
  • Proven track record of delivering value adding data science products or consultancy services
  • Comfortable in an early-stage development environment, with frequently changing demands, building and managing relationships with cross-functional stakeholders and circumstances
  • Experience managing projects with diverse stakeholders across technology and the business
