What's the role?
Data Scientist is a role in Shell's Spatio-Temporal Analytics team within the Decision Science group, providing wide-ranging expertise in statistics and data science, including data analysis, remote sensing, extreme value analysis, process modelling, statistical software development, uncertainty analysis. Team members consult with customers at a wide range of levels throughout Shell companies (Upstream, Midstream, Downstream, Corporate and P&T).
This specific role collaborates with Decision Science staff in UK, NL and with the CO2 Abatement Technology team based in NL and UK. Examples of recent work include analysis and interpretation of satellite data on greenhouse gas concentration in the atmosphere and development and live testing of a technology for 24/7 methane emission monitoring using a beam sensor.
Methane is a potent greenhouse gas (with 30-100 times the warming potential of CO2). Managing and reducing methane emissions along the (natural) gas value chain has a key and short-term positive impact on global warming. Shell has made several external commitments and signed up to the industry OGMP 2.0 reporting framework to reduce methane emissions and increasing robustness of reporting Technology development and maturation is required to achieve these standards and aid the detection and quantification of all emission sources; the team supports this technology program.
