Job Description

Where you fit in?

The main purpose of the role is to provide R&D and consultancy in statistics, econometrics, modelling and data analysis. The team “Decision Science Consulting” provides R&D and consultancy services to many Shell businesses in the fields of process and product development, engineering, commerce, finance and strategy.

The successful candidate will provide statistics support for the Shell Scenarios team along with other consulting and R&D activities. The Scenarios team is at the heart of analysing the scale and pace of the energy transition by developing insight into changing patterns of demand in different sectors, together with the relative competitiveness of different fuels and energy sources as technology, policy and consumer preferences evolve. The team maintains several proprietary energy models, which are key tools for generating insight.

What’s the role?

A decision science consultant, supporting the Scenarios team, has a diverse portfolio of tasks, mostly related to maintenance and development of the proprietary World Energy Model (WEM), or interpreting and communicating the results thereof:

  • Deliver improvements for the WEM by re-estimating or improving econometric models of the global energy market. These models can be simple linear models, but also highly nonlinear or multivariate. The work will include validation against the historical experience and calibration of the WEM quantification of different scenario futures.
  • Maintain, update and model input data for the WEM. Examples are population and GDP projections, historical data of energy consumption, energy prices and taxes.
  • Assist the team in exploring findings, often through graphs and presentations, and helping to both reflect and test scenario narratives with modelling and analysis.
  • Present findings to a wide audience with varying levels of knowledge of the energy system
  • Teach specific topics in statistics or econometrics on request.
  • Maintain an open link with the decision science team.

What we need from you?

  • Academic qualifications around mathematical and statistical modelling and estimation – PhD level is a plus.
  • Analytical and statistical rigor – past work (such as a thesis) to demonstrate this is a plus.
  • A good understanding of the power of graphs. Ability to think in and create graphs. Creativity is a plus.
  • Experience with working in Python, Git and Excel
  • Experience with handling large, sparse, and multidimensional data sets.
  • Good presentation skills with flexibility to improvise if the audience demands it. This includes the ability to synthesize technical analyses for non-specialist audiences.
  • Interest in energy modelling and the energy transition.
  • Self-motivation, sense of curiosity and willingness to climb a steep learning curve.
