Job Description

GEICO Technology Solutions Data Engineering division is seeking a highly motivated engineering leader to join as a Machine Learning Engineering Director to define and drive the strategy, architecture, technical direction, development and implementation of our modern Machine Learning Platforms, Tooling and Services for ML/AI at Scale. You will be playing a critical role shaping the ML landscape of GEICO and deciding how ML should be done. You will need to focus not only on functional requirements but also non-functional requirements to ensure high availability and performance on models running in production. You and your team will build, in collaboration with Data Science teams, the necessary foundations and appropriate governance to ensure guardrails are in place to prevent bad actors, misapplication, and unintended/intended biases from surfacing impacting our business reputation. You and your team need to build simple and intuitive monitoring, interpretability and explainability functions through the ML life cycle while supporting the complex functionality Data Science will require.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead people, products, strategy, and process, and be a thought leader to create a strategy that drives ML Engineering organization as part of GEICO’s data-driven focus
  • Demonstrate strategic thinking and strong planning skills to establish long term roadmap and business plan
  • Strong relationship building to establish and foster great relationships with partner Tech teams and business partners
  • Able to work independently while functioning as part of a cohesive cross-functional management team 
  • Coach, develop, and manage associates and supervisors, including establishing goals and evaluating performance 
  • Develop and align delivery area strategy to support the organizational vision and strategy 
  • Evaluate the accuracy and probable effectiveness of proposed technical solutions
  • Manage the work of multidisciplinary teams that encompass platform engineers and developers/programmers including plans, budgets and deliverables
  • Use cost benefit analyses when proposing and delivering Tech services to meet business requirements
  • Propose and initiate appropriate plan revisions as required based on business need 

Required Qualifications:

  • 9+ years of experience designing, building, optimizing and scaling data-intensive solutions using distributed computing 
  • 6+ years of experience designing and building software solutions
  • 6+ years of leadership experience leading, coaching, and developing teams and associates in data and/or ML Engineering 
  • 4+ years of experience in Agile frameworks and methodologies
  • 5+ years of experience building, scaling, and optimizing ML solutions
  • Knowledge of Software Engineering, Data Engineering, and Data Science technologies
  • Experience in Azure Ecosystem is a plus (Azure Data lake, Azure Data Factory, Azure Databricks, Azure Storage, CosmosDB, ADO)
  • Knowledge on Azure Kubernetes Services and experience with Kubernetes deployments
  • Experience developing REST based web-services with high performance, availability, resilience, and throughput 
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and build/release practices
  • Monitoring pipelines for failures and diagnose/resolve problems. 
  • Concrete experience and strong understanding of data science, machine learning, data engineering, data management, data quality, and data lineage services and technologies
  • Ability to prioritize and drive results based on business value to the organization
  • Strong critical thinking, decision making, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent verbal/written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate to both Senior Leadership, highly technical and non-technical audiences
  • Experience with strategic planning, establishing and communicating roadmaps, budgeting, and allocation of resources
  • Successful experience leading a team that is part of a connected program while also delivering individual team results
  • Experience developing and implementing associate development programs to address sustainable development of relevant technical knowledge
