The Position

The Product Development Data Sciences department in the Pharmaceutical Division of Roche is a newly formed organisation which focuses on Roche’s two key assets: making high-quality data findable and accessible and analysis of data for insight generation.

The new field of Data Science has grown to be a crucial aspect of any business's ability to gain meaningful insights from its data. With the recent advancements in digital technology, the variety, complexity and increasing volumes of data have offered many more opportunities for data scientists.

In the biopharmaceutical industry, each data point is part of a patient's story and their contribution to developing better medicines and understanding disease. It is our responsibility to maximise the use of this data for answering new questions and enabling larger-scale analyses for generating new insights. 

The Product Development Data Sciences Department in Welwyn Garden City is seeking high-calibre industrial placement students to start in June/July 2024 to join our teams to provide a valuable contribution to the development of our medicines. 

Successful candidates will use their degree or passion for bioscience, biostatistics and technical skills to contribute to the success of data science and insights generation at Roche. They will work across diverse areas from the management and governance of data, to acquiring data and engineering solutions for visualising, integrating and analysing data, ensuring data privacy, and also in areas such as learning and process management and healthcare compliance. 

Each successful candidate will receive full training in relevant business processes, systems, software and programming, where necessary, for each role, and will be supported by experienced employees who will provide coaching and oversight on a day-to-day basis.

Who You Are

To be successful in this opportunity, applicants should be:

  • An undergraduate in their second year of their Bachelor's/second or third year of their Integrated Masters Degree 
  • Currently undertaking a relevant data oriented subject (e.g. Biological/ Biomedical Sciences, Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, Bioengineering, Computer Science etc.)
  • Interested in healthcare, data science and drug development - a passion for healthcare and enthusiasm are vital. 
  • Experienced or have some knowledge of data handling and analysis techniques. Programming languages (e.g. R, Python or SAS) is beneficial for some roles but not essential. 
  • Supportive and inclusive of a collaborative working environment
  • Aware of their strengths and development areas

Your profile:

You have extensive experience as a biostatistician, both on clinical study data (phases I to IV) and on real-life data (SNDS, cohorts and registers).

You participated in the design of interventional and non-interventional studies, interpretation and communication of results.

You are interested in innovative designs and data science.

You are impact-oriented and curious, you know how to identify and convince within an international company where data (platforms, data and methods) is omnipresent.

You know how to work with subcontractors.

Your main missions are:

  • Be the expert in the statistical activities of the therapeutic units for which you will be responsible.
  • Participate in the design of real-life local studies (design, definition of objectives, study evaluation criteria, sample size, etc.), the interpretation of the results and the communication of these results

  • Review the statistical part of the therapeutic interest notes.
  • Participate in the review and validation of projects submitted to the internal approval committee of the medical management.
  • Ensure operational supervision of subcontracted statistical activities associated with the generation of local data (statistical analysis plan, statistical review of data, generation of tables).

Your responsibilities and contributions consist of:

  • Being able to answer different methodological questions on any type of study/analysis in a way that is intelligible to a non-statistician.
  • Contribute if necessary to the reflections of the Global teams.
  • Develop and lead a network of internal (global, other subsidiaries, etc.) and external (academic, etc.) experts to help develop the use of methods (statistics, big data, data science) and promote Roche expertise on this domain.
  • Propose innovative methodologies & analyzes (MAIC type indirect comparisons/Machine Learning algorithm/…).
  • Contribute to developing a big data / data science / data visualization strategy with other statistical project managers.
  • Comply with laws, regulations and compliance rules, code of conduct, internal policies and standard procedures of the Roche Group.

Ideally, you match the following description:

  • Master / PhD in statistics.
  • At least 5 years of experience with real-life data
  • Good knowledge and experience in research and/or clinical development
  • Good knowledge and experience in Data Science would be highly appreciated
  • Knowledge of the ICH/GCP, GCP, good epidemiological practices , directives and

regulations relating to statistics.

  • Good knowledge of data management and IT tools
  • Skills in statistical activities (internalized or outsourced)
  • Ability to work successfully in a complex national, multifunctional matrix organization, at all stages of clinical studies.
  • Ability to communicate with ease in writing and orally.
  • Fluent spoken and written English.
