Job Description

The qualified individual will utilize knowledge of informatics to lead a sub-function within the Vaccine R&D Quality organization, specifically the Informatics Development and Data Science group, focused on statistical programming, analytical architecture, and overall system/software configuration (specifically with SAS programs and perhaps R). Within this role the individual will ensure data science capabilities are configured for both the short term and long term by driving large scale architectural design but also in designing fit for us scientific applications that analyze raw data. The individual will work closely with laboratory end users to write SAS programs to generate critical final data or assay results for ongoing clinical studies. Real-time, analytical dashboards may be a critical component to aspects of data science assignments also. S/he will be expected to perform code reviews of junior employees to ensure that no Production issues occur throughout the software development lifecycle or during run-state.

The individual will ensure Vaccine R&D production systems meet capacity demands of the user community, will ensure controlled release and migration of features, and will ensure all updates are compliant. In addition, the individual will drive the evolution of technology that increase performances and will continue to upgrade the backend design both in production and all supporting environments. Although laboratories are key clients, the individual must also ensure that Vaccine R&D’s connection to Pfizer-wide clinical systems or data lakes are seamless, so configuring and maintaining clinical data interfaces are pivotal to success. For this reason, a strong understanding of the software development lifecycle is needed and a robust knowledge of computer programming languages, especially SAS, R, and SQL. Understanding LIMS and other software development is a nice-to-have.

Work will occur on-site although end-user support of external partners and external labs may be required. Some travel may be required when working on global project implementations. The individual may have direct or indirect reports to assist in driving projects, will mentor junior departmental members, but will ultimately take “big picture” direction from the Director of Informatics Development and Data Science. S/he will be expected to bring people together and will drive collaboration to deliver on large scale projects.

Responsibilities

  • Co-lead development of technical solutions in SAS or similar statistical programming tools, Develop or configure statistical programs, reports, interfaces, and related objects.
  • Design large scale solutions and implement architecture necessary for VRD laboratory and related analytics and data analysis.
  • Ensure software is validated according to regulatory standards, including by not limited to 21 CFR 11.
  • Partner with LIMS Architect to ensure VRD information system landscape meets short-term and long-term needs.
  • Act as backup to Informatics Development and Data Science leader, especially in owning the Data Science environment while ensuring that day-to-day client needs are met,
  • Collaborate with technical support team to ensure emergency tickets and bugs are given appropriate attention.
  • Act as stage-gate and perform code-review for all objects (especially SAS) prior to production migration.
  • Lead projects and contribute in tasks that require team to gather and analyze user requirements, models, and/or specifications and convert them into technical solutions.
  • Consistently improve known performance gaps in information systems and investigate new areas for improvements.
  • Write and execute ad-hoc queries used in reports on the fly, or mentor junior members doing the same.
  • Partner with other Informatics leaders to ensure VRD can partner with external labs as per requirements of collaborations and ensure external partner labs can securely analyze and/or transfer data.
  • Partner closely, and lead discussions, with statisticians and laboratory experts/leaders to develop robust algorithms that analyze data.
  • Write departmental SOPs; maintain technical paperwork and migrate such data to archive repository.

Qualifications Must-Have

  • Computer Science, Information Systems, or Statistics related degree plus tangible, extensive work experience.
  • Extensive knowledge and hands-on experience using statistical programming languages including SAS and R
  • Experience with designing, developing, and querying databases required. Oracle preferred.
  • System administrative experience within the use of data science tools and web technologies required.
  • Hardware/server configuration experience required.

Qualifications Nice to Have

  • Life sciences or Biostats expertise around assay development projects or laboratory testing processes.
  • Experience with other programming languages such as Java and LIMS.
  • Experience with regulated documentation and with writing test scripts.
  • Experience with R Shiny.

NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS

  • Will lead weekend/night work when required in order to coordinate off hour system upgrades or weekend end-user support.
  • Travel may be required to vendors or collaborative sites, as needed.

The annual base salary for this position ranges from $113,900.00 to $189,700.00. In addition, this position is eligible for participation in Pfizer’s Global Performance Plan with a bonus target of 17.5% of the base salary and eligibility to participate in our share based long term incentive program.
