Job Description

This role leads collaboration with teams across Pfizer Oncology and the wider Pfizer enterprise to identify and drive the translation of cutting-edge technologies (e.g. ctDNA, AI imaging and radiomics, digital spatial profiling (DSP), organoids, single cell analysis etc.) to better understand tumor biology, improve diagnostics, personalize treatment approaches, and develop novel therapeutic strategies.

The incumbent will be an established scientific or technology leader passionate about the potential of innovative technologies to inform discovery and development strategy and decision making, alter clinical practice and transform cancer patients’ outcomes. They will innovate, create the Pfizer Oncology’s R&D translational technologies strategy, prioritize efforts, and partner with leaders in the Oncology Research Unit (ORU), Oncology Clinical Pharmacology and Precision Medicine (CPPM), early and late clinical development, business development, as well as Digital to ensure the successful translation and application of technologies in oncology research and development. 

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES 

 Strategy:

  • Accountable to develop and execute a comprehensive translational technology strategy that aligns with the organization's business objectives and drives measurable business impact in oncology research and development.
  • Identify and evaluate, in collaboration with Pfizer Oncology leaders, emerging translational technologies, tools, and platforms with the potential to enhance research and development programs.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders, including scientists, clinicians, bioinformaticians, and business leaders, to understand needs, define objectives, and establish clear metrics for success.
  • Prioritize opportunities as aligned with Pfizer Oncology and enterprise strategy to support decision-making
  • Establish partnerships and collaborations with external technology providers, academic institutions, and research organizations to leverage expertise and access cutting-edge translational technologies that deliver business impact.
  • Assess and address regulatory considerations and compliance requirements related to translational technologies, ensuring adherence to guidelines and standards.
  • Maintain current knowledge of translational technology trends and industry solutions via market intelligence and strategic vendor partnerships.
  • Represent Pfizer with senior stakeholders in the external health technology / innovation ecosystem, building trusting relationships that position Pfizer as a partner of choice.

Implementation:

  • Accountable for development of business case / ROI expectations for innovation opportunities, in partnership with Business Innovation (BI) Business Development (BD) where relevant, and work with Pfizer Oncology functional leaders and their LT to obtain enterprise endorsement and funding for the proposed innovations.
  • Lead (with the AI Oncology Strategy Lead) identification of use cases to apply AI, machine learning and advanced analytics in translation of medicines from bench to bedside, and bedside to bench.
  • Lead matrix team across Pfizer Oncology R&D, Pfizer R&D, and support functions to design and execute proof of concept for selected opportunities at the enterprise level.
  • Manage delivery of above-program / enterprise-level innovations in partnership with ORU, CPPM and Development Pfizer Oncology R&D colleagues and other digital / data teams across the enterprise. Responsibilities include leading fit-for-purpose matrix teams to achieve cross-functional alignment, budget management, KPI monitoring and successful deployment.

Impact:

  • Measure and demonstrate tangible business impact of translation technologies and analyzing data to assess ROI and making continuous data-driven decisions to maximize value creation.
  • Drive awareness among Pfizer senior leaders of the value created / ROI from oncology translational technological innovation, and work with Pfizer Oncology R&D Medical Strategy and Scientific Affairs colleagues on external communications on these topics. 

 BASIC QUALIFICATIONS 

  • D. in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g., molecular biology, genetics, bioinformatics) with a strong focus on oncology research.
  • 10+ years of relevant pharmaceutical experience including experience in Oncology R&D.
  • Experience working in and leading cross-functional teams in a matrixed organization to deliver innovation projects.
  • Proven track record of successfully implementing and managing translational technology projects, from conception to execution.
  • Experience working with novel technologies in an early development / clinical pharmacology setting, including partnering with IT.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with external partners.
  • Deep expertise and passion for novel translational technologies.
  • In-depth knowledge of oncology research, cancer biology, and the drug development process.
  • Expertise in a broad range of translational technologies, data analytics, computational tools etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop business cases and secure funding for investment in innovation projects, including senior leadership / executive engagement to achieve this.
  • Demonstrated ability to monitor and report on ROI / value creation from technological innovations within clinical development, including quantitative and qualitative outcomes.

The annual base salary for this position ranges from $185,800.00 to $309,600.00. In addition, this position is eligible for participation in Pfizer’s Global Performance Plan with a bonus target of 22.5% of the base salary and eligibility to participate in our share based long term incentive program.
