Join the Communications Design team responsible for Yahoo Mail, Aol Mail and other communications products. We aim to make communication simple, enjoyable and more productive by building the best consumer-focused inbox—one meant for running the “business” of life—in ways distinct from corporate email apps (staying on top of bills, tracking purchases, remembering appointments, knowing when to bring snacks to the kids’ soccer practice).

You will be joining a team that excels in building prototypes to learn and influence decision making. A strong partnership with the UX Research team has given us a deep understanding of our customers. And we get to learn from experts in a number of design disciplines, as we collaborate across the company on our shared design language.

Responsibilities

A key priority for our team will continue to be ensuring a coherent user experience on Apple platforms. This role will be the primary liaison between other designers and developers of our iOS, iPadOS, WatchOS and MacOS apps. You will review proposed designs for adherence to Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines, and you’ll guide translation of the app experience from the smallest to largest devices. You also will partner with developers to enhance our app with new platform capabilities. Further responsibilities include:

• Ensure our app’s notifications meet user expectations as system conventions change.
• Create accessible layouts as we update our apps from Objective C to Swift UI.
• Develop close partnerships with cross-functional peers; have a strong awareness of technical constraints; proactively fix user problems; and provide assets in the required formats.
• Partner with developers and peers to bring our design deliverables into code; create and maintain Figma resources for iOS-specific components.
• Seek opportunities to have a broader impact, through collaboration with other design teams.

Day-to-day, designers at Yahoo collaborate with partners to define the vision for new features, while owning and driving the craftsmanship for every interaction and visual design detail. You will connect user research and data insights to design decisions at every stage of development, as well as incorporate best practices across multiple platforms and device types.

About you

• Delivers consistent, polished and balanced layouts, through typography, color and visual hierarchy;
• Uses prototypes as a foundational piece of your design process, both to identify appropriate solutions and influence partners;
• Solves user problems in creative ways that go beyond obvious, expected solutions;
• Demonstrates high emotional intelligence when interacting with teammates and other co-workers;
• Presents designs clearly and confidently to facilitate useful feedback while shifting approach based on the audience and desired outcome;
• Takes initiative and accountability for timelines and results; and
• Desires and takes action to grow professional skills.

Qualifications

• 1-2 years of experience in digital product design for mobile apps.
• Portfolio that demonstrates abilities in visual design, interaction design, prototyping and product thinking.
• Proven history of working within a user-centered design process.
• Proficiency in software to create design concepts, prototypes, assets and specifications.
• Skills such as illustration, photography, animation, data visualization, conducting user interviews, front-end programming or data science are a plus!
