The Consumer Analytics team supports Yahoo marketing, product, and business strategy teams by providing datapoints and analyses focused on user behavior, ecosystem health, and campaign impact. The team provides stakeholders with the tools they need to elevate their products and accomplish their goals. This is the go-to team for all things data at Yahoo, comprised of data scientists, engineers, and analysts.

A key responsibility of this role is assessing user valuation and building customer lifetime values (LTVs). The Consumer Data Scientist will pull user-level engagement and revenue data in order to create and maintain LTVs for a variety of products and consumer segments. Product and marketing teams depend on these LTVs for revenue measurement in response to business and product changes and marketing impact.

The ideal candidate has strong SQL skills and is comfortable pulling and handling large datasets. He or she can manage high priority stakeholder requests and ongoing maintenance and improvement of LTVs, while proactively looking for innovative ways to add value with data. The candidate is confident in their calculations, spots red flags in data with ease, and is a master of data investigation. He or she will have a deep understanding of measurement that incorporates incrementality, retention, and lift.

Your Day

  • Become an expert on various user-level data sources at Yahoo, stay up to date on changes, and create custom queries using SQL to pull data from them
  • Study Yahoo’s user LTV methodology: be prepared to field difficult questions, identify the factors behind changes in these values, and walk people from all parts of the business through the process
  • Proactively evolve Yahoo’s user valuation calculation approach in response to changes in the digital landscape and business needs
  • Analyze user-level data with tools like Tableau and Excel, and visualize findings in a way that effectively answers underlying business questions
  • Generate and go deep on consumer insights and competitive intelligence to help teams drive product innovation and iteration
  • Distill all metrics from statistically significant deviations that will impact reach, retention, referral, and/or revenue metrics
  • Investigate data and monitor data quality – partner closely with and provide requirements to the Data Engineering teams that can be clearly acted upon
  • Frame business problems into questions that can be answered through data analysis, and translate business needs into requirements
  • Design and lead time-sensitive strategic research projects involving methodology development, analysis, strategic recommendations and presentation of findings to Senior Management
  • Create dashboards and reports that provide analysis and commentary, explaining product, marketing, and business trends for Executive reporting

Skills & Experience

  • BS/MS in highly-quantitative field (Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Analytics, Data Science)
  • Experience in a digital analytics role and familiarity working with common web and app metrics: browser cookies, pageviews, app install/open.
  • Strong SQL skills
  • Proficiency in strategically using data to achieve insights and goals, and ability to communicate the results of data analysis through data visualization and verbal presentation
  • Demonstrated use of analytics, metrics, and benchmarking to drive decisions
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, meticulous data validation, and ability to effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Google Cloud Platform experience, including BigQuery, is a big plus
  • Experience with big data technologies such as Hive, Hadoop, MapReduce, Spark etc.
  • Experience with statistical programming languages such as Python or R
  • Experience using Statistical techniques including correlation analysis, design of experimentation, linear and nonlinear regressions, logistic regression, sampling and resampling methods, time series, and longitudinal analysis
