Job Description

When: 6 March to 27 June

Who are you:

You are a PhD or Master by Research student at a University in Australia.

Who we are:

Dolby’s Advanced Technology Group in Sydney is focused on creating cutting edge audio and video technologies that drive next generation experiences. Our interests are broad: interactive media using Machine Learning/AI, Data Science of media, cloud implementations of media processing and delivery, and explorations into audio video content creation for immersive media such as XR. In this internship you will spend four months with Dolby Australia researchers to investigate a cutting edge topic in media. We will work with you in the first two weeks of the project to refine the research topic and develop a plan that leverages your competencies to produce novel research that is fun and exciting. We will encourage publication of the output of your project in an appropriate conference or journal.

Example Topic areas we are interested in exploring:

  • AI/Machine learning systems on audio signals, particularly:
    • Content selection and editing
    • Multimodal (audio and video) AI systems
    • Unsupervised learning
    • Federated learning
    • Spatial multi-device and multi-microphone systems
    • Practical implementation and deployment of AI technology in real time
  • Creation of immersive and interactive virtual/augmented reality content, including:
    • Sound design and implementation techniques for immersive soundscapes
    • Storytelling using a combination of lighting, interactive audio and video
    • Virtual environments including audio, video, and lighting
  • Explorations into understanding how User Generated Content is and could be created, in short form and long form:
    • The use and design of technologies for audio capture and mixing
    • Tools and workflows for intuitive efficient and creative outcomes
    • Applications of immersive audio
  • Personalization of the audio experience across the entire population
    • Improving the audio experience across age ranges
    • Understanding how the environment intersects with the audio experience

These points are examples. We are actively looking for new ideas and if your Research project does not fall precisely in the above categories, please still consider applying!

What the internship is about:

  • Project will be in line with your PhD – we will work with you and your PhD supervisor to define a project that fits into your PhD. This should not lengthen your PhD – it will become part of it.
  • We highly encourage publication of the results of your project.
  • Work closely with Dolby research teams to better understand industry based research
  • Where appropriate, hone your skills in AI/Machine learning or the appropriate creative tools

Skills and specialty areas:

We are interested in PhD or Master by Research candidates from Computer science, Electrical Engineering, Science, Music Technology, Media Technology, or Media Content Creation. We are not prescriptive of skill sets, but it is useful if the Research intern has ability in using appropriate tools, eg, a project in machine learning my require programming Python or Matlab or a project in XR creation may use MaxMSP or Final Cut/Logic Pro. More importantly, we are looking for the ability to creatively explore and design experiments to uncover new and interesting learnings in media.

How to apply:

Apply using your CV and include one paragraph summary of your PhD or Master by Research topic and be sure to reference any publications!
