Our global teams share their talent and energy to enable the most immersive experiences that technology can deliver. Join Dolby and work at the cutting edge of the media backbone for the world of tomorrow.

What is the internship program

The Dolby U internship program offers impactful, project-based work experience in a collaborative, creative environment where you work with industry leaders. It is a great way to get exposure to cool technologies, hone your skills, and build a pathway toward full-time opportunities with Dolby.

Our Advanced Technology Group will offer multiple doctoral-level intern research roles during the summer of 2023, working on an exciting array of technology areas.

As a Dolby intern, you could perform insightful new analysis or design experiments that enable the next generation of Dolby products, or combine acoustics signal processing and machine learning/AI and perceptual models in new ways to capture, create and understand immersive audio and visual experiences in the home, for people on the move or in new spaces.

At Dolby, everyone is invested in your success and strives to make it the best place for you to start your career. As part of your intern experience at Dolby, you’ll get the following:

  • First-hand exposure to Dolby technology
  • A diverse, open, and welcoming culture
  • Practical Experience: Get to be a part of real-world projects
  • Support: 1-1 Mentoring plus guidance from the wider research, science, and engineering team
  • Impact: your work could be used by millions of people using and enjoying Dolby technologies

What are we looking for in candidates?

Along with your solid technical skills, candidates should demonstrate problem-solving and analytical abilities, good communication and collaboration skills, a curiosity for how and why things work as they do, and a passion for audio, video, movies, music, or game technology. You have a desire to bring in new ideas and are open to learning from others.

  • Collecting and analyzing unstructured data, applying data analysis skills to data mining to understand customer behavior or enable novel experiments
  • Investigating new machine learning techniques to improve the performance of capture and rendering algorithms for immersive audio
  • Investigating new machine learning techniques to improve the performance of state-of-the-art source separation techniques
  • Developing and combining deep learning methodologies with perceptually relevant metrics
  • Developing new algorithms that enable an amazing variety of interactive and immersive experiences, informed by AI-based, acoustic, and other techniques to infer context of both content and the world around us.

Requirements (one or more of the following):

  • Higher degree student (master’s or PhD candidates) with an interest in audio signal processing, deep learning or data science and analytics
  • Knowledge and practical experience with state-of-the-art deep learning based generative models (diffusion models, GANs, VAEs, etc.)
  • Practical experience with Pytorch or Tensorflow
  • Knowledge and practical experience with techniques for model complexity reduction (quantization, pruning, model distillation, low-rank factorization, etc.)
  • Practical experience with text analysis and clustering of unstructured data
  • Solid background in the theory and application of digital audio signal processing, linear algebra, probability, acoustics, and psychoacoustics
  • Proven ability to pursue new areas of audio signal processing research and demonstrate results through projects, prototypes, patent filings, and papers in peer reviewed journals and conferences
  • Software engineering training or demonstrable proficiency in MATLAB, C/C++, or Python
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Highly Desired:

Experience with one or more of the following:

  • Publication in a major machine learning conference (e.g., NeurIPS, ICASSP, ICLR, ICML, etc.)
  • Data analysis and visualization
  • GPU programming
  • Practical use of audio playback and recording equipment
  • Spatial audio recording, reproduction, and perception
