Your Responsibilities

As a Senior Engineer - Battery Cell Interconnect Welding for John Deere Kernersville located in Kernersville, NC, you will...

  • Own the technical aspects of the cell interconnect bonding/welding process:
  • Design and execution of process DOEs to define cell connection process and parameters
  • Bond/weld process and bond/weld design verification plan
  • Define needed lab equipment for process development and quality control
  • Lead development of the cell interconnect bonding process with machine line integrators/suppliers for new products and existing production
  • Support development of automated, high-volume battery manufacturing solutions by specifying robust cell bonding/welding processes and equipment, maximizing FPY and output while reducing takt tire and manufacturing errors
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams in product design, industrial/manufacturing design, factory automation, facilities and operations, and quality to deliver needed manufacturing solutions, identify opportunities for improvement, and diagnose tactical issues
  • Lead development and execution of ongoing process/inline quality testing for bonding/welding operations
  • Plan, develop, and execute advanced cell bonding/welding technology studies
  • Transfer knowledge learned from laboratory studies and experimental trials to robust high-volume manufacturing solutions
  • Build competency with bonding technologies within the company and contribute to knowledge management/maintenance

What Skills You Need

  • 3 or more years in at least one of the following areas: battery cell interconnection design/manufacturing, weld process development, automated battery manufacturing machine design
  • Experience with battery module/pack design
  • Experience in a high-volume manufacturing environment
  • Background in relevant engineering specialties (weld, materials science, mechanical, electrical, etc.) necessary to develop cell interconnect bond/weld processes and systems
  • Demonstrated ability to independently solve problems, think critically, and generate conclusions/solutions from technical data
  • Demonstrated ability to formulate and execute action plans in situations of ambiguity
  • Demonstrated ability to work across organizational boundaries and drive cross functional collaboration
  • Strong communication, presentation, and organizational skills
  • Ability and willingness to travel, including internationally

What Makes You Stand Out

  • Experience in at least one of the following areas: factory automation, manufacturing engineering (line and process design, material presentation, line/cycle balancing, and visual management tools), data science/analytics, machine design
  • Deep technical knowledge of battery cell interconnect bond/weld technology, processes, industry standards, and applications to high volume manufacturing
  • Experience in quality systems and tools (e.g. PFMEA, Six Sigma)
  • Experience leading a team of highly technical specialists
  • 2 or more years of technical project/program management

Education

Ideally you will have a degree or equivalent related work experience in the following:

  • Bachelors of Arts/Science in a Mechanical or Industrial Engineering, Materials Science or Weld Engineering, or other relevant discipline with relevant work experience.
