General Information

Sony AI is seeking research interns ( Masters, PhD) with expertise in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and closely related areas to join our Gastronomy team. Internships typically last 6 months (and require a hard minimum of 3-months duration). During the internship, you are paired with mentors and work with them closely on all aspects of research, from defining research problems to developing new ML solutions to presenting your findings at top publication venues. The vast scope of the Gastronomy project provides you with a lot of creative flexibility to explore things and learn.

Roles and Responsibilities

• Conduct fundamental and innovative research in machine learning within the Gastronomy domain.
• Advance the state of the art (SOTA) in semi-supervised learning, graph learning, information retrieval, and representation learning strategies for recipe understanding including but not limited to important aspects such as health and sustainability.
• Use our SOTA models to deliver advances in downstream experiments or demos – it has to work in real life. This is a challenge, but also an exciting opportunity to go beyond benchmarks and have tangible societal impact.
• Write reports and give presentations for internal audiences.
• Successful internships may also lead to publishable outcomes in top-tier journals or at leading international conferences.

Required Qualifications and Skills

• Pursuing PhD or completed Masters in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, or related field.
• In-depth expertise in one or more of machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, optimization and/or NLP.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills.
• Proven ability to implement software in Python.
• Familiarity with deep learning frameworks, in particular PyTorch or TensorFlow.
• Excellent oral and written English.
• The ability and the willingness to work as a member of a distributed team spanning several time zones and bringing together people from diverse cultural and personal backgrounds.

Preferably 6 months, minimally 3 months.
